A day

Today was quite a day for walking and exercise.

I walked to the gym, and did a pretty serious workout.

Then I got lunch at Jamba Juice and walked over to Ross'

On my way there I passed one of the vacant office buildings only to discover that it wasn't so vacant anymore -- a temporary bookstore had moved in! They were selling discounted books from a variety of publishers, mostly in new condition. I picked up Robert Sawyers new hardcover for only $5. Sweet! They had a lot of children's books, travel books, cookbooks, audiobooks, a good selection of fiction, and more. No pop science books. But maybe that will change; they will be there for three months and expect to get new stock in every week.

Ross' was a nightmare. Even though I walked in, found what I want (a big beautiful fuzzy red rug for the bathroom to match our flame shower curtain, and for only $9), and checked out, it took ages because the line was so long.

The trip to the rink was only semi-successful: I got my skates and other possessions, returned the locker key and jacket, but failed to have an exit interview with the manager (bitch) and bug her about my tax forms.

All told I'd say that this trip was about an hour of mostly walking and some standing, plus the workout itself.

Then I finally mosey'd on home, only for my stomach to explode (several times).

I took a very nice 1.5 hour nap and then got up and headed to BBB to return items. Service was quick and prompt, thank goodness.

Then, I foolishly decided to WALK to the Castro from there; I've heard Q talk about doing so, so I just assumed that it would be a reasonable walk. Now, I don't know if I just took an inefficient route, or what, but since I spent the whole walk on the phone with [livejournal.com profile] spiritchrysalis, I know exactly how long it took me -- 43 minutes. I was, naturally, twenty minutes late to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] mikz for dinner. Luckily, he seemed cool with it.

Dinner was good and tasty. We tried the thai french fries for an appetizer (sweet potatoes tempura'd in coconut butter, from what I could tell), and they were delicious. Afterwards, we mosey'd on over to Hot and Hunky to verify if they were closed or not.

Turns out they are temporarily closed for remodeling and renovations. So they shall return triumphant, thank goodness! I was totally bummed that they might be closing.

Then we chatted over ice cream, walked from there to Mission, and parted ways.

All in all, that portion of the evening was about 60 minutes of walking.

So I walked for about two hours today and also worked out. Go me? But no wonder I'm exhausted.

On the list for tomorrow: Call students who are in danger of Ds and Fs, call chem students with extra credit assignment, do laundry, finalize and print syllabus, edit article for journal and do at least one chapter for textbook company. That seems manageable, thank goodness. Maybe if I get enough of it done, I'll go work out at the Van Ness gym and then treat myself to a cheesy movie afterwards.

I want to give my students some fun extra credit assignments for the second quarter. The sort I have in mind is mini research projects on chemical stuff that impacts society, health or their personal lives.

The first one I came up with is sugar. They would be expected to find out what the physical structure of sugar is and then do research on a sugar substitute's structure. They would also be expected to find research on the negative effects of various sugar substitutes and summarize the pros and cons of each sugar substitute, citing those papers/studies.

Since many of my students, especially the girls, probably drink Diet Coke, I thought this would be useful for them.

Anyone have another chemically interesting project that young people should be educated about?

[livejournal.com profile] kaidevis is coming over with his... lubricating oil and his... DVD and his... big tool to keep two lonely Moonbase ladies company tonight.

What a stud.

Of course, this means we'll be able to kill the mosquito breeding grounds, put up our paper towel holder, my new over the door mirror, and my hooks, and watch Maybe Logic, finally. It's another hot hot evening at the Moonbase.
