So I'm really behind on keeping people up to date on my life. Here's one of my many overdue updates.
The day after my birthday, my super-awesome housemate
pixie_mschf and her husband, S, offered to make fondue for dinner. Squee!
T, the three-year-old, was with relatives, which made for a quiet, pleasant dinner. He's a sweet kid, but not so fond of eating, which can make dinners... interesting.
S's girlfriend, who is super-awesome, was over for dinner, and
pixie_mschf cooked meat and cheese fondue for dinner last night. I opened a bottle of my mead and we all enjoyed that. Then, just when it was time to clear away dinner, the doorbell started to ring!

A whole bunch of people I've met over the last few months came over -- it turns out Ms. Mschf invited them all over for a surprise birthday party!
pixie_mschf brought out chocolate fondue, chocolate pecan pie, and a cute little chocolate cake. They sang me happy birthday, and I was silly and tried to blow out the fondue flame to no avail. :)
One couple gave me a visa gift card for $40! S &
pixie_mschf gave me a bunch of pomegranate-scented toiletries, and travel-sized sponge and loofah, since I travel so much. S's girlfriend gave me a bottle of ginger-flavored wine which she says is really fantastic. Another couple and their daughter gave me a $20 certificate to Borders bookstore. E&A, our awesome yet mono-vanilla neighbors gave me a really funny card, and K gave me hugs.
It was kind of overwhelming. I hardly know these people, and they not only came over to wish me happy birthday, but some of them even bought me gifts! Since I got to the area, it pixie_mschf, S, and now the community they've gathered around them continually seem to manage to do little things that have a big effect. It's not the actual things they do for me, or give me, or say to me. It's the meaning behind the gesture. It makes me feel welcome, and liked.
I am very lucky to have found such amazing housemates and such an amazing community.

- 03:03:40: Is it really so wise to talk on the phone when you've just broken up with someone? It's hard to say no when he asks, but... seems unwise.

The mac upgrade question
Aug. 31st, 2009 09:25 pmWhile I still qualify for the student discount, do I put out the cash for a serious laptop upgrade?
Options...
OR
My current laptop is:
The current laptop has issues in terms of the case being oddly cracked (a lot of laptops from this generation do this). Switching laptops would give me the upgrade to Snow Leopard and iLife (value $134), an increase in processor speed, an increase in RAM speed, an improved graphics card, the addition of AppleCare ($299), the value of the iPod ($259), the switch to the unibody, improved battery life, backlit keyboard, and more. Quantifying the value of the increase in processor and RAM speed, or the graphics card or the value of the unibody and battery life, is hard. But of the things that I can quantify trivially, I'd be gaining a value of $692. I should be able to sell my existing laptop for between $500 and $1000 (when changed into Canadian).
So, the total cost to me would be $250 - 650 + tax.
The question is, is an improvement in processor speed, ram speed, graphics card, unibody, battery life, backlit keyboard, etc. worth a middling $450?

Community screening
Aug. 1st, 2009 01:09 amIn response to the question of why I want to join a poly meetup group:
Since the financial snafu means that I need to give the dealership another check, and the dealership is about 10 miles from the beach with the poly picnic, I decided after some thought that I should obviously at least drop by the beach thingy for a little while. If I feel fairie deprived, I can always go Sunday.
I had a really good day at work today. Then, I went to have dinner with the future housemates, and got to hold the baby. She's so SMALL! I mean, I know that's the way newborns are, but damn! Katt points out that she doesn't seem so small when you remember that two weeks ago, she was inside Katt.
Very true. Babies are the ultimate parasite.
Anyway, Katt's spouse and friend departed for a gaming night, and Katt and I chatted at length, until it was time for her to pumpkinate. I drove home, watched some episodes of Burn Notice, and now I'm going to sleep.
Yay sleep.
I'm feeling much more relaxed about my ability to perform at work, but I'm quite anxious about trying to do the school-related work necessary by August 10. So, Sunday I hope to buckle down and start chipping away at that. I know now what will happen if I take an extra term to complete the degree, and it isn't so bad. But I'd still rather get it out of the way, even if it makes me a little crazy over the next week and a bit.
I'm looking for a hot bi babe to clean my dishes with her feet and care for my imaginary children! No, seriously, I'm just looking for nifty poly-friendly people to hang out with and be friends. Any hot bi babes would be icing on the cake.

Doppelganger part 2
Jul. 31st, 2009 12:07 amI guess
Doppelgangers and hot TV scenes
Jul. 29th, 2009 11:58 pmThe main character in Toronto-based TV drama "The Listener" looks and even occasionally acts uncannily like
ebenezer. It's kind of disturbing, but entertaining.
He's a paramedic telepath who fights crime/helps people in need.
Also, the scene in the first season of Burn Notice where Michael and Fiona finally hook up? Hawt. With the spy fighting sex and all.

Update and this weekend
Jul. 29th, 2009 11:51 pmUpdate
I think most of the banking stuff is resolved. The only thing I still need to do is change the address when I move to my permanent address and cancel the old account. One thing that may be a problem is that it looks like my application for a secured credit card was turned down. I didn't even know it was possible to get rejected for a secured credit card. So I'll need to deal with that.
School stuff... I've confirmed that as long as I do graduate before my year at the job is up, a later graduation date is not a problem for my employment. Even if I never graduated, they would just retroactively reduce my salary. So if I need to take an extra term to graduate, and my school will do that, I can. But I'd really rather not.

I have two social opportunities before me this weekend:
- A Faerie Festival about 35 minutes away from here. Would cost $10 admission, and I wouldn't know anyone there, but it could still be fun. I just might be tempted to spend money. Which is not evil, given that I now am gainfully employed, but still not always a good thing. I figure going to this is better than staying in and watching TV all day.
- A poly picnic on the beach north of Chicago. An hour's drive if there's no traffic, plus the cost of tolls. No admission other than food to share, and built-in social foo. But I need a new bathing suit, as this is sadly not likely to be a clothing optional beach.

Fangirlness
May. 8th, 2009 01:02 amSo, which ones would you do? Which ones would you have a relationship with?
* Peter Petrelli (Heroes)
* Mohinder Suresh (Heroes)
* Charlie Epps (Numb3rs)
* Don Epps (Numb3rs)
* Anita (Numb3rs)
* Abby Sciuto (NCIS)
* Tim McGee (NCIS)
* Ziva (NCIS)
* Tony Dinozzo (NCIS)
* Jethro Gibbs (NCIS)
* Chuck Bartowski (Chuck)
* Sarah Walker (Chuck)
* Casey (Chuck)
* Ellie (Chuck)
* Captain Awesome (Chuck)
* Morgan (Chuck)
* Hot asian girlfriend of Morgan whose name I'm blanking on (Chuck)
My top choices are Peter Petrelli, maybe Mohinder, Charlie Epps (drool!), and Abby Sciuto, in terms of sex, although there's a lot of characters on that list I wouldn't kick out of bed. Oddly, although he's really hot, there's a strong possibility that I wouldn't do Dinozzo because men who are cocky in that way tend to get my back up.
In terms of relationship? Heroes characters are WAY too angsty, in spite of Petrelli's extreme hotness. Not going there.
I can picture a relationship with Charlie Epps, Abby Sciuto (rrrrrow, she is so perfect, we would be totally unbearably cute together), Tim McGee, and Chuck Bartowski.
Too bad none of these people exist! :P

Apr. 21st, 2009 03:50 pmI have an important question. Do any of you know someone who lived at 421 Natoma St. in San Francisco?
This is one block north of Howard, between 5th and 6th Street.
This is very important information to me.
Please email me privately or message me here or elsewhere if you have any information about this address.
Thanks!

Quick hypothetical
Mar. 15th, 2009 01:39 pmImagine a journalist has just installed wordpress for their new mini-publication. They want you to design a custom template so that their wordpress site doesn't look generic. They are on a tight budget, so they want just the basics. Currently the install looks a lot like a basic blog.
How much would this cost (an approximate range)?

For PolyWolf
Jan. 25th, 2009 10:39 pmThree years. Three years of ups and downs. Three years of love and lust, missteps, and mistakes.
Three years of joy.
We've both grown and changed so much. I am so proud of you, of myself, of us. I'm grateful for how much you've given to me, and how much you've put up with. I'm grateful we've had the strength to make it through the rough spots -- it was worth it. It still is.
In another three years, I do not know what we will be. In another three years, I do not know who I will be. All I can say with certainty is that right here, right now, I want you in my life. I cannot imagine my life or my future without you.
I love you. My love for you is a constant, reassuring presence that brings me peace. And when I really think about the love we share, when I really let go, I feel a high note of pleasure spread across my breast like the ringing of a bell. I ride the crest of that feeling up, and up, until a thrill zips up the front of my neck and fireworks go off in my head. Oxytocin, dopamine, endorphins -- I could call those fireworks by many names. Today, I prefer the simplest: love.
Happy anniversary,
