Following up on Wired, moving on with my life:

Well. They said they'd be getting back to people 'by the third week of October.'

It is now the first day of the fourth week. And its time for me to figure out what I'm doing with myself. I'm obviously going to keep on looking, and intensify my search, in my field. But... what else can I do? Well...

New Oh, and since I'm suspecting some of you don't know... Tutoring requires my going to someone else's home for an hour to 1.5 hours at a time and getting paid $20/hour. Teaching skating requires going to Yerba Buena or other specific skating rinks for hours at a time if I do a good job of building up a clientel, and getting paid at least $40/hour; it goes up to $70, and I haven't figured out yet how to value myself in the market here. So one involves lots of travelling and lower pay.

The best time to contact a company is around 10-11am. That's the time when people are most productive, in my experience. Everyone's been there for a few hours so they're into the swing of things, they're awake. They're not hungry yet, and not in food coma as they are after lunch. So, when I say ASAP, I mean within the next hour and a half, or the same time tomorrow.

Also with the Wired thing - sometimes you really have to pursue a job. If they tell you that they're still making a decision, tell them you'll call them back in two days and then do that. Keep calling every day or two. When you speak with them tell them, "I don't want to be overly aggressive, but I am extremely interested in this job and I think I'd be a good match for Wired, so I don't want to just let this go". Make sure you're polite, but also make sure you're firm and confident.

Otherwise, I'd suggest the part-time retail/cafe job with tutoring on the side. You can make a lot of money tutoring, especially with a physics degree from MIT. You can probably make ~$30/hr for that. At the same time, having a part time job will give you the chance to have something solid to back you up.

Much as I am not a fan, you might want to look into working at Starbucks. I've heard they give even part time employees medical and dental insurance, though this could be wrong.

Good luck!

No time right now to meaningfully take the quiz.

*big hug* Much good luck.
