Do they give any editorial help? (Your story is good but, it would be great if you changed it just a little) Or is it just a yes/no process?

I'm not very familiar with the writing process, only done a little bit of tech writing professionally, but having a good editor for that was amazingly helpful.

I think it varies from publication to publication, and also with how good your writing is. If your writing is really really bad, they might just say that. If it is good, but not quite what they want for their magazine, they might tell you that and give you a clearer idea of what sort of writing they want, or suggest other magazines to submit the story to. They might say "This is neat but has the following issues. Fix them and then send it back to us and we MIGHT take it then."

They might just say no.

It depends on how many subs they've had lately, the mood of the editor who reads it, etc. Highly variable, basically.
But I'm hoping for feedback if it is rejected

Feedback is always good. Some sort of feeling about where you are, and where you need to be in order to get published would be (in my pretty worthless opinion) incredibly valuable if this is something you really want.

Personally, if I had written something and I got feedback that it was close, but not quite what they are looking for this month, or that it needed just a few changes, I would be incredibly encouraged. :-)

Now, the bad part: Sitting and waiting!

Luck!
