Danae has a new experience: Fire! 911!

Last night as we left The Artful Dodger after birthday desserts and drinks for
futabachan, I had two new and, um, exciting experiences.
We emerged, and saw a fire. No idea how, but the dumpster belonging to the apartment building across the street had somehow caught fire. It was in a wooden enclosure, and there were several trees nearby. It had even begun spreading to an awning over the walkup to the building.
I called 911 on my cell and told them about the fire. Based on the questions being asked, I'm relatively certain I was among the first callers. They said they had someone on the way, and then hung up. My phone switched into emergency mode. I'm not sure what that is, but since we were downtown surrounded by people with phones, and they were on their way, I figured it was fine to turn off, so I did.
We watched as a firetruck arrived and fought the fire. In the category of "dumb rich person," some guy turned down the street in an Audi and tried to park in front of the fire hydrant while the fire fighters were trying to hook the hose up to it. Um, WTF? There's a fire the width and breadth of a small bedroom, with flames leaping five metres or more in the air, right in front of you. See those guys in uniform, with the funny hats? The ones with the bright red truck? Those are firefighters. And guess what: the nice firefighters want to get to the hydrant, because that's what it's there for!
They put the fire out and so we left before the fumes went too toxic.
Later that night at the apartment,
linuxspice helped Sybil discover a new cat toy: The DVD player. She would stalk up to it, cautiously, then back off... then stalk to the side and come at it from a different angle (because it might not notice her coming from THAT angle!)... and then linuxspice would press the button and the tray would open and poor Sybil would jump back and back off... and then she'd slowly edge closer and closer...
Kitty! Kitties are funny. :)
Customs at Pearson now has an express line for US citizens. They seem to have redesigned the whole customs area, arguably for the better. I made it through really quickly and now I am waiting for my plane. And of course, the answer while waiting is to email and JOURNAL! Not that there's wireless here -- there isn't. So, I'll just have to post this later. Anyway, I go brush my teeth and then read a book; I'm starting the next book in the Wizard series by Diane Duane (the second last one).
