Today, [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae and I took Hamilton by storm.

She picked me up at 8:30 a.m.; our first stop was a small garage sale just down the road from my place. I scored a large cooler bag there for twenty-five cents. Excellent.

Then, we went up the mountain to Mohawk College where there as a massive garage sale organized by United Way. $2 to get in, but it goes to a (admittedly not so fabulous) charity!

There were about 100 vendors there, I'd guess.

My scores:
-A jewellery box which has a rotating hook for hanging necklaces, with some damage to the top where someone set down an alcoholic beverage which spilled a little -- $2
-A nifty, bright yin yang patch that defies description -- $1
-Three nice shirts, one of which I gave to [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae -- $2
-A classic silver metal drink mixing kit -- $2
-A little foot stool that opens up for storage space. It wasn't real wood, but really effective fake stuff; the existing upholstery was ugly, but because it was nice and flat it was a perfect candidate for a first reupholstery project! -- $4

We grabbed a mini lunch and then headed to Cottage 13 for piercing removal. He was pretty amazed and appalled at the shape my left piercing was in. He had no trouble removing them (thank goodness), and didn't try to charge me, but I gave him a generous tip anyway. The nipples are almost all healed, already. Maybe someday I'll want to try this again, but for the time being the idea of doing ANYthing to my body other than healthy diet+exercise is utterly unappealing.

Next stop was Ottawa Street. At first, we were on a roll, looking at nifty fabrics and having a ball, but partway through our fourth shop, we realized we couldn't think straight. We'd passed the same chinese restaurant several times, and it had looked appealing every time, so we hopped on over there. Dunno if it was our hunger, or what, but boy was it good! Looking now at my calorie expenditures from the garage sale and wandering Ottawa St., I can see why the mini lunch we had at my place didn't cut it.

Anyway, we went up and down Ottawa St. looking at fabrics for her and [livejournal.com profile] etherlad's wedding present (some custom bedding), for fabric ends for my reupholstery experiment, and with an eye to EVENTUALLY reupholster the sectional in the basement.

There was also, of course, a stop at Yarnopolis. *wipes the drool off her chin* Nice, fabulous ladies there, tons of gorgeous yarn... I think I've now seen the pattern I'll be using for the baby present, an adorable bunny pattern by Sirdar. I scored some lovely eyelash yarn that will look great with the estelle dazzle I'm working with to make a shawl. I also looked at some sparkly yarn to potentially use for the spikes on the dragon hat, and picked up the needles I need to do the next part of the hat.

We left Ottawa St. with a ton of swatches for the happy couple to contemplate, my new knitting acquisitions, and half a metre of slate blue ultra-suede ($3.75) for my reupholstery project, exhausted.

I was dropped off at home, with the agreement to save the movie for the next day, and I began to tear apart the footstool. Five hours later (minus time taken off for dinner), I had my first reupholstery job done!

Actually, the hardest part was not the reupholstering, which was relatively easy and quick -- it was the un-upholstering. Removing those staples is tough! I'm also regretting choosing, as I did, not to replace the foam. My feet are currently propped up on the footstool, and the foam I had thought was adequate really isn't. It kinda hurts my heels if they're at the wrong angle for too long.

I'm rethinking my plans to reupholster the sectional in the basement. It's in pretty poor condition, and my parents are offering me the old living room couch. Now, that couch has some issues, but it's in far better shape. And, it would probably make more sense to put that effort into sewing a slipcover for the couch, which can be removed, washed, and put on a new couch when and if I got one.

But, for now, I give you:

Baby's first reupholstery project -- $7.75 + staples
I took two pictures of most of the shots, one with flash, and one without, because the colours looked so different with and without.

I'm very pleased with how it turned out. It looks fabulous -- even professional. My only regret is not adding in more padding while it was taken apart. Now that I've put it together, I probably won't take it apart to fix this. Shame, that. Ah well.

For now, however, it is bed time. Tomorrow is another new day, and I can get started on fixing the jewellery box, more knitting, and research for my decoupage project. Oh yeah, and some freelance work type stuff. Living life is so much more exciting than watching mediocre TV all day!
