The New York Times has apparently just published a massive series examining the reality of class in America.

It has a neat toy which shows you about what class you are. Here's what I got:
Occupation: 64th percentile (this is the one which varied the most since none of the options matched my profession quite right)

Education: 91st percentile
Income: 38th percentile
Wealth: 55th percentile
AVG: 62nd percentile

Find out your own class by going here. Note that this is specifically about American society.

Very interesting.

Entertaining enough, as a bio technician I am 20% lower on the occupation scale than a secretary. I'd be better off class-wise repairing motorcycles for a living.

Hmm, odd that they have those four, but not the most important one... influence/connections.

Playing around with it, and noticing how very subjective the 'job prestige' is... Retail over Bartending? Lawyers over Authors? It would be interesting to see their data for those rankings.

The rankings are based on annual polls that are conducted to see what people think of various professions. Canadian rankings would be slightly different, I imagine, though not substantially.

So it is subjective then.

Also interesting that I couldn't find 'independantly wealthy' (and thus not having a job) or 'politician' on the list.

What, being a politician gives you a class? I would have thought choosing "politician" would automatically rank you as below lower-class, somewhat on the same level as the lesser demons.

To paraphrase (I believe, correct me if I'm mistaken) Harvey Keitel in Reservoir Dogs... "Just because you're in a class, doesn't mean that you have class"

Hmm. Very appropriate. :)

Thanks. Yeah, the original quote was "Just because you are a character, doesn't mean that you have character". Or words to that effect.

I always knew that being a film geek would come in handy one of these days!
