A recent study shows what many of us already suspected:
The medical category known as "overweight" is actually the optimal category for long life.

(doesn't help me much, of course... I'm still in the unhealthy category)

It's not obeisity alone that is the risk factor; it's the sedentary lifestyle that so often accompanies it. If you're overweight but active, you've significantly reduced your risk of practically everything nasty, even if you never lose the excess pounds.

I'm still in a danger category as well - but not nearly as much as I was a year ago, so I'm happy. Also, I'm much healthier.

I wonder what they define as overweight?
According to the American BMI charts, at 5'8" and 165lbs, I'm just on the lower edge of 'overweight; with a BMI of 25, and yet it wouldnt consider me 'underweight' until I dropped below 125lbs. Which is utterly ridiculous.

There has to be a better means of making an educated guess at how much weight above a certain leaness is not too much.
(and this would vary for men and women I bet)

BMI is notorious for not being a good measure. People who are particularly muscley have a really high BMI. Schwarzenegger was used as an example. He would have an insanely high BMI, while I'm not sure people would argue him to be over weight.

As a member of weight watchers, I have to say that I think their weight ranges are pretty good.

Ah. But they still base themselves on the BMI.

haven't had a chance to look over the study, but my first response is to wonder whether they excluded people who are underweight as a result of a medical condition (ie, AIDS, cancer, TB, hyperthyroid, etc.), not to mention people who are overweight in consequence of a medical condition, as being unhealthy for a primary reason *other* than weight would skew the results.

Aaaah...

How soon she forgets, isn't it meant to be me with the memory of a gnat on acid?

Hey!

Sorry we didn't answer, but Jenn was working until 7:30 and came to Fortinos to wait for me - and I wasn't out until 9:15. Then we ate supper and by the time we came home it was 10:30.

We tried calling your cell, but you weren't picking up.

We can do something Saturday night, maybe.

SWEET!
I'm considered overweight, but I've got better strength, stamina, and energy levels than my technically average weight sister.
*flexes muscles* Oh yeah!
I also have the bonus of having the boobs that go with the weight ;D
*flexes boobs* Oh yeah!
*giggles*

Sorry I missed your call today.. We both worked late, yay for not getting to have a life because of work.. *pout*

Weight is subjective. I never thought of myself as excessively overweight; unfortunately, the 40 lbs extra that I carry around is causing me serious pain in my hips. If the weight is not causing heart or back issues I would not fret. Everyone's body is different some people are naturally overweight; some underweight.
