Plus size cross-border trip
Apr. 1st, 2005 12:33 pmMy mother and I are talking about going to Buffalo this weekend to pick up a US tax program for me, and to visit Torrid and Lane Bryant for a clothing spree. Both stores have awesome plus size selections that are much more hip and attractive than what you'll find in the traditional plus size stores (or any I've ventured into here in Canada so far).
I'm rather torn about this; I don't NEED clothing, but neither do I have "enough" clothing. Plus, I theoretically, one of these days, no really, will lose some weight. Really. I hope.
But, it could be fun, and I do like buying clothes.
BTW, if my mother and I were inviting people to join us, would anyone be interested in doing so and pitching in for gas and tolls (or not if my mother didn't request it)?
And, in the meantime, a poll about clothing and "weight loss"

Date: 2005-04-01 07:34 pm (UTC)When I'm planning on changing size, I try to buy as little clothing as possible. Because having clothes that you love that are too large for you sucks just as much as having clothes that you love that are too small for you, trust me. One thing I did do that was sensible: buy smaller jeans off of ebay. Shirts are good for a wide range of sizes, but a belt only goes so far, especially if you have to look professional for work. After a while, it got to be like stocking toilet paper; when my jeans didn't fit, I rummaged through the stack in the closet of smaller sizes to see what did.
In general, I find involving clothes in the process of fitness and weight loss an incredible de-motivator. The whole, but if I lose 5 lbs I can fit into this cute dress, so I'll just buy it is the best way to make me obsessive and useless when it comes to fitness and weight management.
So, if I were facing the choice you suggest, I'd buy as few clothes as possible until the end of the weight change. In the meantime, I'd save the money for clothes later, or if I felt it necessary to use spending as a motivator, I'd buy a heart rate monitor, some weights, or some books on nutrition and fitness. Personally, I found teaching myself about fitness and nutrition a better method than hiring professionals; it kept me involved in the process and reminded me that every choice I made was MY choice.
