My mother and I are talking about going to Buffalo this weekend to pick up a US tax program for me, and to visit Torrid and Lane Bryant for a clothing spree. Both stores have awesome plus size selections that are much more hip and attractive than what you'll find in the traditional plus size stores (or any I've ventured into here in Canada so far).

I'm rather torn about this; I don't NEED clothing, but neither do I have "enough" clothing. Plus, I theoretically, one of these days, no really, will lose some weight. Really. I hope.

But, it could be fun, and I do like buying clothes.

BTW, if my mother and I were inviting people to join us, would anyone be interested in doing so and pitching in for gas and tolls (or not if my mother didn't request it)?

And, in the meantime, a poll about clothing and "weight loss"

[Poll #466169]

Belts are my friend and I don't really mind oversized shirts so mostly I wouldn't feel the NEED to shop while losing weight. But if I happened to wear out my clothes while doing so I would buy more same as always. The one exception would be expensive things like corsets and dresses - I have definitely put off buying those until I was the weight I wanted to be.

for the last question i'd say "spend a small amount" less than moderate. a piece here and there as a reward, but save the bulk of it for goal.

I shopped almost exclusively at secondhand/thrift stores from like size 14 to size 8/10 where I am now. If I ever hit 6, I'm allowed a fancy shopping spree, but I'vealrgely started trickle-buying clothes now that there'sless chance I'll be ridiculously small for them within a few months. I also got rid of (gave away) like everything larger than a 12 (that wasn't loungy sweats or whatever) to help underscore to myself that I intend to keep myself down around this size.

The poll answers didn't fit my opinion, so I chose the essay option instead. :-)

When I'm planning on changing size, I try to buy as little clothing as possible. Because having clothes that you love that are too large for you sucks just as much as having clothes that you love that are too small for you, trust me. One thing I did do that was sensible: buy smaller jeans off of ebay. Shirts are good for a wide range of sizes, but a belt only goes so far, especially if you have to look professional for work. After a while, it got to be like stocking toilet paper; when my jeans didn't fit, I rummaged through the stack in the closet of smaller sizes to see what did.

In general, I find involving clothes in the process of fitness and weight loss an incredible de-motivator. The whole, but if I lose 5 lbs I can fit into this cute dress, so I'll just buy it is the best way to make me obsessive and useless when it comes to fitness and weight management.

So, if I were facing the choice you suggest, I'd buy as few clothes as possible until the end of the weight change. In the meantime, I'd save the money for clothes later, or if I felt it necessary to use spending as a motivator, I'd buy a heart rate monitor, some weights, or some books on nutrition and fitness. Personally, I found teaching myself about fitness and nutrition a better method than hiring professionals; it kept me involved in the process and reminded me that every choice I made was MY choice.

I was thinking "addition", but then it didn't quite seem like your other questions were worded to apply.

I am currently refraining from buying any new clothes until I don't fit into the ones I've got. However, I do buy a piece here or there as a reward for the next incriment lost. The discuraging thing is I think I'll still fit into the same clothes for another 70lbs. I can barely tell any difference in fit even though I've lost 25lbs so far. Oh well. I'll be less discouraged when I get off this 4month plateau.
