Good, or evil?

On the one hand, the people almost always come out looking better. On the other hand, it seems to be all about CONFORMING.

I find it particularly painful to watch those cases when someone from subcultures related to mine are nominated by their parents. Because god forbid they should not conform, and have coloured hair, and collars and leather trenchcoats.

mm. Collars and leather trenchcoats.

And yet, hard not to watch...

I like the English one a *lot* more. It's not a VISA product placement, and the hosts are a lot nicer to the people involved. "But you have great tits! And that shirt does nothing for them!"

I don't like so much when they try to change the style someone wears that suits a particular sub-culture, but I'm not that fond of conformity within sub-cultures, either.

I do like when they show people who are trying to look really great but are choosing really unflattering shapes/fabrics/styles that sometimes it's not about disguising or compressing or draping one's shape so much as enhancing it.

I had no idea what you were talking about until I read [livejournal.com profile] mactavish’s comment and realized you must be talking about a television show.

Of course, coloured hair and collars and leather trenchcoats for lots of people (not all) are about conforming, just about conforming to different norms. And pinstripe suits are presumably not about conforming for some people. Eddie Izzard, for instance; they’re definitely not about conforming for him.

Most of the time, I think the people involved come out looking and feeling a lot better about themselves. Every now and again, though, they take someone and offer them a style that has nothing to do with who they are, and that bugs me.

They always try to match the style the person has in mind for themselves, but enhanced and much more expensive. If they manage it every time, then I say kudos to them.

I wish I could get the $5 grand New York shopping spree without having my friends and family nominate me for being the worst-dressed person they know, though.

the whole idea of "looking better" is about conforming.
now, i can hear already somebody saying that people who don't conform can still look good. and while it is true that they may not be conforming to particular things such as cultural dress styles, they are still conforming to the cultural standard of beauty.

Interestingly enough (I don't know if you're watching the episode that's one now) the couple they chose for worst-dressed couple is the one they thought was trying to conform too much from their original style during the trial shopping day.
And man, the people they picked certainly did need some help 0_o

They left the aging punk rocker couple alone because they said they were perfectly happy with their look, no matter what their preppy daughter thought :)

It's on TLC. It is, by definition, an evil beyond reckoning.

That, and While You Were Out.

Pieces of shite, all of them.

Hello Dana and yes agree!!

Hello Dana, I agree...I saw the cute couple in trenchcoats and with cool coloured ahir and though YUM, YUM!! I liked them the way they are! The future will be everyone will have an image and style consultatnts and a make-up person at teir beck and call (including the make-up people!!) hehehe.

Look at the business spa's are into now...It;s like overnight and now the spa industry is hopping!! To many insecure people being told to be more insecure, I think.

Personally, I always thought just wearing collars and trench coats to be a wonderful look!
