Shaineh, a Sphynx and Devon Rex Cattery

This is the cattery from which I hope to one day buy kittens. Sphynx and Devon rex are both nearly hairless breeds (Sphynx have peach fuzz, and Devon Rex have no guard hair), making them ideal for people with allergies such as myself.

They're in Oakville. Anyone up for a field trip if they accept visitors? I've already emailed to inquire. They have kittens of both types right now, btw.

I feel compelled to respond to this... I totally understand wanting a specific breed of kitty, I'd love to have a snowshoe one day... but please consider going to the Hamilton SPCA to adopt a cat. Most of them are domestic shorthairs, nothing exotic.. but you could be saving a life by doing so... whereas the cats at a breeders are in no danger...

Here is a list of some of their currently adoptable cats. (http://www.hamiltonspca.com/adopt/default.asp?type=Cat) Adopt instead of buy, and save a life!!

As it happens, I'm allergic to cats in spite of the fact that I adore them. In order to own one and not be utterly miserable, I would have to get a more hypoallergenic cat such as a sphynx or devon rex.

I'm horribly allergic to cats too, and asthmatic... and what I've learned is that though the first week or two can be rough, your body actually adjusts. That is why getting allergy shots work for a lot of people, because they actually expose your body to the allergen until your body simply accepts it an no longer reacts. I do (quite completely) understand where you are coming from, I guess I just have a different perspective on it.

the problem here being that she's allergic to cats. And while I *have* once seen a Sphynx at the shelter, it's very unusual to find them there. There *is* a Devon Rescue, however,

Which is also a wonderful idea... I suggested the SPCA because it is local for her, but many rescues will work in a faily large area...

PLEASE be aware that there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic cat (or dog, actually). There are cats that may be less allergenic, and you might go spend some time with a Devon Rex or Sphynx cat (breed clubs have representatives who will happily let you meet their cats) to see how you react, but there are no guarantees. Even individual cats may affect you when the breed as a whole doesn't much.

I did some research on this, because both my boys are HIGHLY allergic, and I adore cats. (So does [livejournal.com profile] bester, actually. I think [livejournal.com profile] jadasc only adores them when they're in the microwave. :P) No dice. :( Hairless cats still have plenty of allergen in their saliva, and they still clean themselves. It's a damn shame, but definitely be careful.

Yeah. Certainly something to do before jumping into the time/money/etc-sink that is a cat. Of any kind. I think there are different kinds of cat allergen types, so you might be better with one rather than with another. I like how my poofy cat smells better than the plush cat!

One bad thing from my mom's side I didn't end up with!

Warning: Irritable Danae alert. Trying to make this as civil as possible, given that you're the second person who has irritated me on this particular post -- you shouldn't have to bear the brunt of both incidences of irritatedness.

Didn't ask for advice. Didn't want advice. Shockingly, capable of doing my own research. Bad mood. Bad Danae.

awwww

They are very sweet looking. Field trips are a good way to pin down what you might not (if anything) be allergic to.

And keep in mind that shelters don't always list breeds correctly. Looking at that one SPCA page, I saw a part-Russian-Blue! I wonder if they are all as fun and goofy as mine. Plush cat! (And vocal, which isn't a breed characteristic, apparently.)
