Ganked from , Lloyd Axworthy, former high-ranking government official here in Canada, blasts Condi Rice for US' behaviour over the missile program in an open letter. It's very catty.

I sent it to my father; initially he claimed it was a joke; I told him he was wrong. Then he sent me this, which is an interesting article denouncing global warming as a phenomenon. The author is a meteorologist, and he actual cites papers (I find that very exciting. Mmm, citing).

Anyway, I'm interested to hear people's thoughts on both articles, yea or nay or neutral.

Have at, but please play nice!

As I read it, the article is questioning the connection between Arctic ice melts and the greenhouse effect, rather than dismissing the existence of global warming.

So, I guess he could very well be right. :)

wrt the former article: this is the joy of being an ex-politician. Intimate knowledge of the issues (and the people) and no constraints.

wrt the latter article: Global warming is one of those things that isn't really as certain as people lead others to believe, but should probably be treated as if it were certain nonetheless. As a (rather left wing generally) geography teacher put it: The theory of global warming is based on temperature data from only the last 100 years - barely a geological blink. Of this data, it's only been in the past few years that 70% of the world (ie the oceans) have been tracked, and for most of the time, it was mostly only cities (which as they grow generate heat naturally) that were consistantly tracked.

Is it possible? Yes. Is it certain? Not by a longshot - especially as we are coming out of a mini-ice age from only a few hundred years ago.

Have you been tracking the science on this recently? From what I understand, everything you say describes the state of our knowledge around about the mid 1990s. Newer research has convinced almost all scientists studying climate, that this kind of climate change is extemeley likely to be happening. Unfortunately I don't have any references, but I am curious how recently you formed the impression you're expressing here.

It's nice to see a politician capable of making a point clearly, concisely, and with considerable humour.
