Um. So I just popped a cd into the laptop for the first time in a long time, and it is being NOISY. I think something might be broken.

Anyone had this happen with their iBook?

It's still working; I'm successfully ripping the CD. It just seems very noisy about it.

In other news, there are stupid people on the int0rweb. Go figure.

If the disc has printing on it that is 'unbalanced' (that is, more on one side than the other) it can cause a CD to make more noise... I wouldn't worry about it if it's just this one disc.

Is it actually the CD vibrating, or the computer? It's not uncommon for slightly loose components in a laptop (e.g. the battery) to vibrate noisily.

At one point the metal shell that surrounds the optical drive on my iBook (old, tray-loading, not slot-loading - I'm not sure which you have) got slightly bent and would scrape against the disk, making a remarkably loud noise. It wasn't too hard to open it up to the point where I could flex that bit of metal back into place.

That said, it's never really been a quiet drive.
