Since cellphone plans in Canada are so much more expensive, I've been attempting to evaluate how many minutes I use per month, how much data I use per month, and how much off-peak minutes I use per month. So I thought I'd ask you all what YOU do! If you're off the scale in either direction, please select the closest option. I will sort for Canadian vs. US users before I post any results.

i filled out your survey, but I'm not sure about the data stuff... Is that referring to stuff like text messages and picture files?

I would get fewer minutes on my plan (T-Mobile) if the data plan were avaliable at a lower price point. I don't use the data plan that often, but when I do (travelling), it's a lifesaver. So $20/month of my plan is "dialup insurance", essentially. 600 anytime minutes is way more than I use, especially now that work pays for a VoIP line, and I'm not living in the city coordinating social things.

My previous plan (Sprint), at about $35 for 300 anytime + nights + weekends, was a better deal, but had no reasonable data service option.

I guess I want to explain

I pay about 105 a month, however, there are 3 phones on my plan. We share 800 minutes. All of us have some sort of text messaging plan and two of us have picture sharing plans.

I am not sure what you mean by data, so I took that to mean pics, text messages, and online mobile use. Mark is the only who uses the web from his phone. My plan is 59 a month and Mark and Natalies are an additional 23 each.

I rounded down on the data plan - I don't actually use zero, but it's way rare that I go over my 3meg allotment - I think it happened once. Usually I use more like 1 or 2. Er, I think. My statements from my cell company no longer call out my usage on it unless I go over.

About how many "anytime" minutes do you have?

With MetroPCS, a little over 44 thousand. Unmeasured usage makes billing simpler. About $55/month including an hour or so of international long distance. The LD is measured with indefinate rollover.

With T-Mobile, as many as I've paid for. At 30c/minute I wait for the annual "doesn't expire for a year" special and wind up with a backup for about $50/year which I'm loathe to answer. I lost it about four months ago but see no need to tell 'em. What if I find a useable handset before my minutes would have expired?

Do you need a phone in your pocket? Would something like Vonage (VoIP, US$2x/mo, unlimited usage to US & Canada) work?

I couldn't answer the data question because it varies so wildly. There are months where I use it a small to moderate amount, from my phone only, but there are other months where I am on the road and connecting my laptop through my cell phone becomes my primary form of Internet access - except when I stay with people who have good net. There have been months when I've spent 50+ hours online doing ssh and web on my laptop via my phone.
