I'm about to apply for a job as editorial assistant at a small kid oriented publisher in Toronto. They are accepting cover letters and resumes via both email and fax. Anyone have an opinion on which medium is more effective/more likely to get me noticed and read?

They posted the job on Dec. 16 and applications are due January 10.

Stayed up late again last night. Stupid. But got lots more packing done. I'm awake now, but I kinda feel like I'm falling asleep. Rolling over and doing so again is so tempting... But I should shower, clean dishes, and do more packing. *sigh*

email is much easier for the receiver to deal with. I always get annoyed by people who fax their stuff in.

Good luck!

Yes. Faxing is much more effective. Email is easy to delete without looking at it. Faxes are usually recieved by a secretary of some sort and put on the desk of whoever it's addressed to...

Faxing, no question. Every job-hunt-help workshop I've gone to says the order of preference for applying is
In Person
Fax
Email

Emails can tend to get overlooked or deleted, and because they ARE so convenient, more applicants do them. Plus there's the whole potential for formatting problems thing to worry about too.

Whether it is email or fax is unimportant. What is important is that you manage to ensure that a decisionmaker reads it. This means bypassing human resources departments (with the possible exception of establishing an in-person dialogue with a recruiter or headhunter). Send your email directly to someone who could potentially make a hiring decision, or better yet, to a friend already within the organization. The key here is not so much to have direct communication with your future boss as it is to make sure that a human actually pays attention to your submission and does not treat it as a number. HR departments cannot differentiate your application from countless others, and they have no particular motivation to get it into the hands of anyone official.
