When the IRS audits you, how many years back might they choose to audit you on?

Or, how far back do you need to keep records in case of an audit? Things like credit card bills or cellphone bills or such.

...

I've sorted through all of my files and I'm ready to pack them. Two to three more boxes should account for all my books, files, photographs, magazines, etc. Then I'll need someone with a car to drive me to a post office so I can mail these suckers. woohoo, or something.

Taking ventolin is helping. I slept all day and I'm going back to sleep again now. I'm getting better at coughing stuff up, and my sinuses are almost all clear, but I still have trouble breathing at times. Hopefully I'll be well enough Thursday and hopefully Friday to help Amanda out at the store and do some more packing.

Offers of company while packing are most welcome. It keeps me productive, and I AM getting close to the point where I need to be out of here for any housemate they find.

Wee.

Seven years is the safe number. See Publication 552 for details based on what kind of record it is, and what your tax situation is.

Generally they don't go back more than a couple of years, but they COULD go back as far as seven, and they tell you to keep your records at least that long.

I am paying back taxes on a mistake from 7.5 years ago.... I personally would go back 8 years to be safe.
