OK. I've reached a very sad conclusion. The left nipple has migrated. It's almost at the tip. If I leave it, it'll migrate all the way out and I'll have an open wound on the tip.

I've gotten used to the nipple rings, and I really LIKE having them. So I have a number of questions. Some of you may be able to answer them, so I'm writing them down here.

  1. The right nipple doesn't appear to be migrating, but it is crooked. If I'm going to take the left one out, should I just take the right one out too, let it grow in, and try again some other time?
  2. If it migrated once, will it necessarily migrate the next time?
  3. How long do I have to wait to try again?
  4. Anything else I should know?

Can't answer any of those. But I'm really sorry to hear that the one is migrating out. :( :(

If it migrates like mine did, it won't leave an open wound... it's healing as it migrates out, so there will be a slight groove at first and that will heal over time.

That said, I'd take it out now rather than let it push through.

Generally, when a piercing migrates from a nipple it's because the piercing wasn't quite deep enough, or so I've been told.

Talk to a good piercer for more information.

*sympathy*
i've tried to get my ear cartilage pierced twice, and both times it threatened to sprout keloids, so i had to take those piercings out. it sucked, given how much i'd been looking forward to having them healed (and now i can't get any new piercings at all in my ears, since my bike helmet would rip them to shreds.)

I have my nips pierced, the healing time for successful piercings was on the dot at 11 months. I don't, however, know if they would take as long to heal closed were you to remove them (i actually think the waiting period is shorter... maybe 2 months?). If you are unsatisfied with anything about either of them, get rid of it... the longer you wait, the longer it's going to take you to get them perfect (if you get the left repierced straight, it's going to make the crookedness of the right one all the more apparent). The left one will not necessarily migrate the second time, but you might want to look into finding a better, more experienced piercer. There are awards and contests available for body modification artists... if you seek one with a few of those on his record, you're likely to score someone with real talent.

Good luck. Sorry that didn't work out well for you.

I would give you my $0.02, but I've never had any trouble with my nipple piercings.. or any of them really.

I must have nipples of steel considering all the abuse I put them through. :)

Not sure why it is migrating, but I would take it out now and let it heal. Nice thing is that nipple piercings heal amazingly quickly with nothing in them. As in (and I have witnessed this) they start to close the same day to the point where you cannot put jewelery back in. When I got mine done, the left one was done incorrectly and so we had to take it out and let it heal. It healed closed in a week and I had it repierced 7 days after the original piercing. ***WARNING*** The repiercing was much more intense because I retained all the sensitivity from the original piercing. However, no lasting damange was done and they piercings are healthy even after 5.5 years.

I don't know whether this will ever be an issue for you, but I know there can be problems with repeatedly-pierced nipples if you ever want to breastfeed a child.

I learned about it from [livejournal.com profile] boot_slut, but I'm sure a reputable piercer would at least know who to ask about it...

That's the only issue I know with repiercing, but I've never been pierced, either.

Hi! [livejournal.com profile] joedecker sent me. I had one that migrated all the way to a milk duct, and when it broke through to that point I removed the jewelry. It healed FAST, almost scary fast. Here's my experience and the info I gathered.

Q1: If the right one is crooked but stable, then it just depends how much you mind the crookedness. Piercers would say (have said, to me) take it out if you want it redone. Me, since I've had two migrate, I'd keep anything that was stable and count myself lucky. :-)

Q2: I have asked this same question. The answers I got have all seemed to say "Not necessarily, but there is a chance it might migrate again." Some folks say that repiercing behind the scar tissue left from the first one's migration will keep it anchored well. This makes sense to me. I intend to find out firsthand.

Q3: I bet not long at all. Mine, a piercing I'd had for years, was unable to take jewelry within hours, sealed within days, and completely not tender (returned to pre-piercing sensitivity levels and sturdiness) within a week. I was in awe.

Q4: If you're going to take the left one out, I suggest taking it out soon, if only because the scar tissue may eventually settle out at a different color than the surrounding surface. Mine looked fine until a little while into the healing, so this never occurred to me. Days later I looked at my nip and it had a line of white going up one side. Oopsie. :-)

Caveat: I don't ever intend to breastfeed, so I'm pretty casual about messing with my nipples.
