OK, so the back of the box for Vanilla Sky reads:

Young, handsome and wealthy, publishing tycoon David Aames can have anything his heart desires. Still David's charmed life seems incomplete. One night, David meets the woman of his dreams and believes he may have found the missing piece. But a fateful encounter with a jealous lover suddenly sends David's world out of control, rocketing him into a roller-coaster ride of romance, sex, suspicion and dreams... to a shocking, final awakening you will never forget.

For those of you who have seen this movie, do any of you actually believe this is a description that gives you a sense of how fucked up, scifi, and trippy this movie actually is? Because I thought this was going to be another Jerry Maguire, and it sure as hell wasn't!

Not that I'm complaining; it was much better than "another Jerry Maguire," but I'm still kinda going, wtf?

Edit
A challenge:
I am in search of a good, thought-provoking movie that was done by Hollywood and WASN'T based on a book, classic tale, foreign film, etc. Ie., a perfectly original screenplay done by Hollywood that doesn't suck.

Vanilla Sky, apparently, is based on Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar's Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes).

I loved vanilla sky - and yah, that description makes the movie sound less than it is. If you liked that, you should check out Abre los ojos - which is what vanilla sky is essentially the english translation of (done by the same guy, if i recall correctly) - and stars penelope cruz as well...

Worse than that, it's actually a shot for shot re-shoot with the American cast in place of the Mexican one.

At the possibility of sounding snobbish, I much preferred the original 'Open Your Eyes'.

Can't guarantee that it's not based off of something else, but American Beauty...

Heh... the only reason I encountered the wonderfulness of this movie was because I caught a glimpse of it after seeing a different movie at the Metreon. The description does it no justice.

Magnolia?
The Cell? (one wouldn't think so, but the artistic quality is incredible)

I think I'm stuck on Tom Cruise here...

I loved the art direction in The Cell. I think it was an underrated movie, overflowing with eye candy.

Being John Malkovich!

for a movie from the same screenwriter that takes a twisted and, i hat to say it because it is so overused, meta look at adapting works for the screen, try "Adaptation".

It is a very special movie.

Does Memento suit those criteria?
