I just used the split ender for the second time and I have some thoughts.

I've heard things before about it damaging people's hair. I can't speak for other hair types -- I have hip length, thick brown hair with a slight wave in it but mostly straight.

Anyway, here's the things I think you can do wrong that can lead to damage from using this tool:
(1) trying to brush upwards with it... it just doesn't seem to work brushing upwards. Downwards/sideways seems to work best
(2) not brushing your hair out first extensively, or using a huge clump of hair; this can lead to it catching and seems like it could cause new split ends
(3) most importantly... letting some of your hair that isn't supposed to be being brushed get caught in it, perhaps when it is looped over to get it out of the way. This will lead to large chunks getting cut off!

So. If you brush each lock of hair before you run it through, brush only down or sideways on small hair chunks, and are very careful to keep the rest of your hair out of the way, you should be fine.

Oh, and it was definitely quiet enough that I was able to watch a movie while I did it.

but how well did it work? Removing the split ends?

It does a fair job. My hair feels noticeably silkier afterwards. There are still a few split ends here and there, but I think if I used it once a month with care, and treated my hair well in the meantime, they will be so few that they won't be worth mentioning.

It sounds like a great way for two people with long hair to hang out for an afternoon would be to watch TV or a movie, and do each other's hair with the split-ender; I'm guessing that, esp at shoulder-blade length, it'd be a lot easier for somebody sitting behind the subject to manage the restrictions you mention (particularly #3) than for the subject hirself. (Now I just need to find somebody else with long hair who lives in the SBay and is willing to hang out and trade hair-care on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. *g*) Actually, I guess a multiplayer board game like Settlers would work well too, if you had four or six people -- use the ender between turns... *g*

Well, you're supposed to use the split ender at most once every three weeks, so you wouldn't want this to be a weekly event, or you'll cut off new growth as it happens!

I've used mine twice and had it for about 2 months, but of course it was a two month gap between the first and second time. And yes, having someone else do it for me would be way easier.
