Both nipples
14 gauge titanium barbells
Cost of labor: $40
Cost of barbells: $20 x 2
Total cost: $80

Total for just the one nipple would be $45.

Currently, the only reason I can think of not to go through with it is expense and inability to breastfeed if I ever breed. Are there any other possible bad side effects etc.?

OK, several months of no hot tubbing (I'm not sure how many).

inability to breastfeed if I ever breed.

Not true! I have known more than one woman who had pierced nipples and were able to just remove them when they got pregnant and breastfeed just fine.

Mmm, titanium...

Exotic materials aside, I have a simple rule for Mary: Pierce any place you don't want my mouth to go. ;)

Are you allergic to metals? I know I had much fun playing with the hoop through the nipple of the one ex who had one of those...

Not allergic, simply averse. When I nibble on flesh, metal is a distraction.

I'll vouch for piercing nipples having no effect on breastfeeding. You do have to take them out, they'll hurt babies mouth. (and actually, you want to take them out around 7th month when your breasts start swelling).

And contrary to popular belief, milk does NOT squirt out the holes you've created!

*grin*

go for it. pierced nipples - SEXY. be warned though, nipples can take a long time to heal.

I believe it only causes problems for breastfeeding if the piercing is routed wrong.

(Also, the holes can indeed express milk, notwithstanding the other commenter... in fact, it's possible for breast milk to find its way out even without any holes. But it's not especially common and I think it only occurs if you don't nurse/pump regularly.)

The only other problem I can think of is the possibility of antagonizing your parents/relatives, depending on how strict they are....

One of my concerns when I got pregnant, based on anecdotes, was that milk would "squirt out the sides" because my nipples had been pierced. Not true. Milk comes out the milk ducts; there aren't any "holes" per say. I suppose if you managed to pierce a duct, the milk might come out the side. But I've never heard of that happening.

As far as milk finding it's way out? Any time your breasts let down, milk comes out. Your individual physiology will determine whether it seeps out or shoots out, but it's VERY common.

Things that cause let down can vary from being too full, to someone suckling, to the sound of a baby crying on TV... and that's why you wear absorbant pads inside your bra if you breastfeed.

I breastfed just fine with my left nipple pierced. I did take the jewelry out at about the 6 or 7th month of pregnancy though, when it started to bug me.

My nipple took about a year and a half to really heal up. They can tend to flare up with your hormonal cycle, too.

If you do get them pierced, I'd recommend starting with 12ga instead of 14ga. Mine started behaving much better when I put the 12ga ring in, and I've heard similar experiences from many people.

I got mine done with 12ga curved barbells, initally. It took about 6 months to completely heal. Since I've been off the bcp, they _hurt_ and I have to take out the piercings. I've gone about a week without rings in. I now wear straight barbells, as they're much easier maintainance. I've heard vague concerns of breast cancer (my father flipped out when he found out, and I have no idea how he found out), but I don't know anything substantiated. I can also now fit in 10ga rings, with no real stretching.
Where're you getting it done?
I'd also recommend getting them both done at once, if you're thinking of having them both done eventually. They'll be more even and symmetrical. Poke at me with more questions if you want.

Disclaimer: I know NOTHING about nipple piercings, specifically.

However, I'm finding that with my belly button piercing, going out of my way to care for it sensibly has made the recovery period go much more smoothly than I was led to expect. They warned me at the time of the piercing that belly button piercings are the hardest to heal, that it takes 6 months to a year, and most people are on the later end of that. That fit with what all my friends who have navel piercings have told me about their experience. However, it's 5 months since the piercing, and as far as I can tell, the piercing has been fully healed for at least a month now.

I credit a large part of that with having changed my clothing entirely to prepare for it. They warn you that waistbands are irritating to a belly-button piercing; knowing I wanted to get it done, I started switching to low-waisted pants a good 8 months before the piercing. I'm also careful to keep my belly button dry when not in the hot tub, as the moisture combined with warmth promotes infection.

I would imagine that there are similar things you could do to help a nipple piercing heal quickly. Like, say, carefully considering what bras would provide the best environment for a piercing, and comitting to wearing ones that don't only for special occasions for the first several months.
