flying in modern times
Jan. 8th, 2004 06:26 pmI have a plane flight leaving SFO for BOS at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow. Any advice on how early to arrive (normally in the last year for a domestic flight I would try to be there 1 hour - 1.5 in advance)? Any advice about weird things I can't bring with me, or have to carry on instead of packing away, or vice versa?
Also, bostonites, any word worth speaking of about the weather? Shall I expect snow and ice and sleet and hail and frogs flying out of the sky at me?

No, seriously... it was in the teens today. When you factor in wind chill, I believe the radio claimed it went down to -20.
All I know is that I was outside with layers and gloves and such and still couldn't feel my fingers after <5 minutes.
Pack warm.

Date: 2004-01-08 06:34 pm (UTC)see you tomorrow!
ICE!
Date: 2004-01-08 07:01 pm (UTC)The frogs from the sky will be wearing scarves, and will only fly towards you.
And I'd expect 2 hours in advance to be there.
Weird things - do not even bring pocket knives. No carry on scissors of any kind, not even nail scissors. Or clippers. Nothing even conceivably sharp. If you have to bring it, put it in the bag that is shipped in the belly. They won't even let you bring it carry on. And they will comfiscate them.
Oh - and be prepared to take off your shoes.

90 minutes should be plenty; the lines this week haven't been very long.

Nail clippers you can, in fact, carry with you - but if they're the sort with a fold-out nailfile, break that off before you get to the airport. (I actually worked on a crocheting project on the plane on one of my first post-9/11 flights; I took a nail clipper to use in lieu of scissors, and my crochet hook was plastic. They didn't give me any hassle.)

Date: 2004-01-08 08:01 pm (UTC)And I guess I'm getting my 2 hours from what tELsay for Logan...which you're landing at and not leaving from.
Re: ICE!
Date: 2004-01-08 08:01 pm (UTC)Every time I do not have a pair of nail scissors with me I shred nails on things and they proceed to get caught on hair, clothing, and anything else they can until I am rejoined with my scissors. It was bugging me.

Date: 2004-01-09 05:22 am (UTC)B) I've gotten best results through securing dressing like I was going to a fancy resteraunt or job interview. Your underwire bra may or may not have enought metal in it to set of the detectors this week(the TSA was warning aboutthis a while ago).
C)90 min to an hour before your flight is probably plenty. Ive been giving myself 2 hours out of paranoia, and spendng 1.5 hours sitting at the gate reading.
D) As they said, fucking cold. Going to stay that way till next week some time.
