I failed to check on my NetFlix cue, and it has shipped me Vampire Hunter D and the Escaflowne movie.

I'm not done watching the series (I think I'm halfway through), plus I've heard the movie is really really bad. Should I just send it back when I get it? Or should I watch it?

At least watch Vampire Hunter D. And then get the 2nd movie - its better than the first and explains a bit more. I only got to see the 2nd one recently, and I wish I'd seen it closer to when I saw the first.

The Escaflowne movie is good, but makes no sense if you havne't seen the series. Plus, it's not quite the same, but still good.

Well you could watch the rest of the series in one go, and then MST3k the movie. Out of shear amusement value, I would be interested to see if the seiyuu for the japanese version make the movie much better (possible).

I liked the Escaflowne movie. And I even saw it before I'd seen the series. (But then, I also like the Utena movie. With the possible exception of the part with the giant carwash.)

I also like D, though the second movie, Bloodlust, is better in almost all regards (graphic quality, soundtrack, story, performance of the voice actors -- though it does have the downside of being, so far as I can tell, available only in English).
