I just signed up for Netflix. I think I'm going to start with Anime. Any opinions on what I should order first?

I've seen Evangelion, Utena, Majestic World, Magic User's Club, some of Dot Hack, Angel Sanctuary, some (maybe all) of Ah My Goddess... Not sure what else.

Suggestions?

Record of Lodoss War, both the OVA and the series (Chronicle of the Heroic Knight). I have both. Escaflowne (both movie and series) are also good. Nightwalker: Midnight Detective and Vampire Hunter D (particularly the more recent release, Bloodlust) are probably the best vampire-themed shows I've seen. Vampire Princess Miyu is OK, though mostly you learn from that one how dangerously demon-infested everyday can be. (Adopted a stray dog? It's a demon. Have a favorite toy? Definitely a demon. Made a new friend? She's probably a demon too!)

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (again, OVAs and series) is nifty too, though different from anything else mentioned in your list or mine above -- SF adventure with a comic twist.

Oh, also, I've heard very good things about s-CRY-ed, but haven't seen any of it yet.

These are both pretty common, but you did not list them.

Serial Experiments: Lain

Anything by Hayao Miyazaki

Hmm... I'd add Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus (in 4 parts, not the movie or the condensed versions), the first Kenshin OVA, and (as someone else already suggested) anything by Hayao Miyazaki. Oh, and if you're in the mood for something more dark and serious, "The Grave of the Fireflies" and "Jin-Roh."

On the other hand, if you're in the mood for something almost totally mindless, there's always Love Hina...

I really enjoyed Hellsing - it's a slighly more serious anime with vampires and guns. Good music, too.
..
If you want some hentai, try La Blue Girl or its better sequel La Blue Girl Returns. Basic premise: there are these sex ninjas who fight by getting it on. Whoever comes first loses. There's also a lot of tentacle rape, but it's done in a funny way. Claymore and I really get a kick out of the series.
..
Happy watching!

Trigun. Hellsing. Violinist of Hameln. Escaflowne. Excel Saga. Inu Yasha. Read or Die. And you should watch Utena again just for fun, because it's just stunning.

Based on what is available in the US:
Haibane Renmei, Full Metal Panic, Witch Hunter Robin, anything from Studio Gibli (Castle in the Sky, Sen to Chihiro, Omohide Poro Poro, etc), Somedays Dreamers, Sakura Wars OVA, Excel Saga (veeeery sureal, but fun), Cowboy Bebop, Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040, Martian Succesor Nadesico (older but still amusing), .hack//SIGN, .hack//Liminality, Slayers, Spriggen, Chobits, DNA^2, and InuYasha (it is 131 episodes, just finished in Japan, yay!).

If you have a particular genre you like, I can focus a bit more.

A word or 2 on NGE (Neon Genesis Evangelion), it is not to be watched from ep 1 to the end. It has been known to cause phychotic episodes in sentient beings. It needs to be rearanged and some episodes excluded altogether. It is a relatively odd and long story.

Also, the aforementioned titles have been watched with the dub turned off, so I can not say if the dub is any good (other than InuYasha, which is good, and .hack//SIGN which is deargodinheaven horrible).

IM me if you want me to bring something to S&P *)

I actually already saw Nadesico and loved it (special showings at the anime club one January).

And I've seen all of Eva (in order) and it didn't seem to permanently damage me, but who can tell this early? muahahaha!

:)

And of course, having been introduced to anime by conoisseurs/snobs, I never watch anime with the dubbing on. The english voices just always sound so CHEESY. They ruin it.

Anything by Rumiko Takahashi. That would be, among others, Urusei Yatsura (the second movie "Beautiful Dreamer" is easy to find, and probably the most accessable), Maison Ikoku and Ranma 1/2.

UY ran for 200+ episodes and 4 (maybe 5) movies. She had to do be doing something right.

A few more recommendations

I don't remember seeing these mentioned, but I would recommend them all:
Bakaretsu Hunters (aka Sorcerer Hunters), which I own and will happily lend
Fushigi Yuugi - LONG series, but lots of fun
Bastard - great 6 ep series

I've gotten mostly turned off of anime lately, but there's some stuff I've enjoyed in the past, beyond what people have already said.

Rurouni Kenshin starts out decent, gets very good towards the end of season 1 and beginning of season 2, and then takes a turn downhill. Perhaps it gets better after early season 3, but I couldn't stand to watch it after that. In addition to the TV series, there are some OAVs; the "Trust" and "Betrayal" OAVs (one hour each, now available as a combined two-hour DVD) are some of the best animation ever made. They arguably spoil parts of the TV series, though, so either watch all five seasons of the TV series first or decide you don't care. Very violent and bloody, particularly the OAVs I recommended.

I really enjoyed Kimagure Orange Road, but on a second viewing I can see how it could be annoying. It gets somewhat better as the series goes on, but not so much that you should keep watching if it irritates you. Mostly non-violent.

I'll second the Miyazaki recommendation, though his work varies from truly excellent to merely good. "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Princess Mononoke" are on the truly excellent end; "Spirited Away" is also good. Princess Mononoke is very violent and bloody; the others are not.

I'll also second the Slayers recommendation. It's fun for a couple of seasons, though I found it repetitive after that. Avoid the OAVs featuring Naga; they're dreadful. You want the TV series. Frequently violent but never bloody or graphic, I think.
