[livejournal.com profile] unseelie and I are hoping to "getaway" to nature to be pagany on Saturday. The only redwoods we know about is Muir woods, which are usually crawling with touristy types that we want to kill.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to go to get in touch with oneself and the universe? Non-obnoxious-tourist redwood groves, foresty places, etc.? I suggested Harbin hot springs as an option.

Sequoia park is bigger than Muir woods, but further away. There are a few local places that are good for day visits, but I don't know about camping. Boulder Creek has redwoods.

Harbin will be crowded.

Assuming you have a car, you can go down the Peninsula to Big Basin State Park. They've got plenty of redwoods and significantly fewer people around there.

I was gonna say what the first two already said. I'm right down the street from Big Basin, and there are a lot of other redwood parks in this area too. Even if Big Basin has people on the paved trail, head off on the side trails and you shouldn't encounter too many people.

Samuel Taylor State Park. It's out Sir Francis Drake Blvd, which you take if you're going to Point Reyes via San Rafael. Tourists go there, but mostly during summer, not fall, and most of the fall visitors are day visitors, not campers. There aren't a lot of old growth trees there, but the second growth is huge and deep and lovely. There are bike paths with more people on them, but you can get off the trails and be fairly isolated.

I do, but it would not be a day trip :) It will take you 4-6 hours to get there.

The Avenue of the Giants, up the 101 a ways, is real good for secluded redwoods.

[livejournal.com profile] richwillpowers found them to be a wonderful place for attunement....

You're right to stay away from Muir Woods. Mt. Tam, which is just above Muir Woods, is way better.

There are plenty of redwoods in the South Bay as well. For example, Woodside Park off of 84.

If you will be at the disaster house party tomorrow, I'd be happy to discuss the various options with you.

I was going to suggest this. Murias and I often camp here. this time of year the campgrounds are emptier and there are many trails!

Muir Woods...

I visited Muir Woods just last week. If you go off the main trail, you can find some really quiet stretches. The short Lost Trail was deserted and quiet, even though it was very close to the tourist throngs.
