Weight Loss/Body Work filter, please read
Oct. 29th, 2003 02:13 pmSo I know there are people out there who do not like hearing about weight loss, dieting, exercising, etc.
I firmly believe that I do NOT have body image issues. I know what my body looks like. I think I'm sexy. I would find myself MORE attractive if I lost some weight. Consider that I'm 5'2", and about 175. I'd like to be more in the 130, 140 range, but would settle for 150. Doctors would have me believe that if I weigh more than 120 I'm in the unhealthy range; I think they are full of shit.
Anyway, in spite of the fact that I don't think I have "issues" regarding my body, I do know that others do, and those issues may be triggered by hearing me talk about dieting, weight loss, exercising for weight loss, etc.
So I'm creating a body work filter in which I will put any posts that mention weight loss, exercise for the purpose of weight loss, dieting, etc.
If you do NOT want to be on this filter, please let me know so I can not include you. Keep in mind that I'll be reviewing that armband thing for the mag, and you will not get to hear about it and how much it rocks or sucks if you are not on that filter. Of course, the short sweet review will be in the newsletter sometime in late December early January.

Whoa, opt-out vs. opt-in...

Date: 2003-10-29 03:34 pm (UTC)oddly, i'm not offended by hearing about people's attempts to lose weight. clearly i am unenlightened. i do, though, get exasperated hearing about attempts to lose weight at the expense of getting enough nutrients.

Date: 2003-10-29 05:22 pm (UTC)please keep in mind that this is a LOADED, PAINFUL issue for many, many people (esp. women) and that it can be as triggering of negative feelings as a discussion of abuse could be. in fact, coercive dieting is often used as a form of abuse against fat kids.
this is not any kind of pc issue, so I wouldn't try to read that in here.
I, for one, applaud Questioner's sensitivity and ask the she filter me out of these diet/body posts.

Date: 2003-10-29 04:11 pm (UTC)I added you and would be honored if you wouldn't mind adding me back. I would be interested in the following filters: Overshare, Pagan, Metaprogramming and the Weight Loss/Body Work filters. I have not completely gone into my filtering process yet.
Also I almost think I know who you are in RL. You will have to let me know.
Thanks!
J

Date: 2003-10-30 09:19 pm (UTC)To elaborate on your careful navigation of this...
I think that self-size-preference is very similar to the self-gender-image issue. People will push you to be more masculine or feminine according to traditional roles. Not only will the "status quo" of traditional roles be pushed onto the respective genders, but the "enlightened folk" will often push men to be less masculine, women to be less feminine.
With body image, people who would push you NOT to lose or gain weight when you want to aren't any better, really, than those who'd push you TO lose or gain weight when you don't want to.
