[livejournal.com profile] unseelie's car is better, and while they were there, they discovered that the reason his battery keeps on running down is that there's an internal short in the battery. Which is free to fix since the battery was from AAA and is still under warranty. It still came out to more than we really can afford... $392 including diagnosis, labor and parts. I don't know if that's more than a starter motor SHOULD be, but whatever.

And in other news, its amazing how much it can cheer me up to see a friend in the middle of the work day. I should do that more often. Let it be known that lunch breaks with friends are good, and people who work in SoMa should contact me! But yeah. After [livejournal.com profile] rosefox left, I had this big stupid grin on my face. And we decided we should do lunch in the future! That's hella cool. ;)

I'm having a good day. Getting actual WORK done!

At 5 I will get off work and head to Van Ness where I will pick up [livejournal.com profile] unseelie's car. Then home to shower and then off to meet him at the train station. yay!

Lunch?

I work at 3rd and Market - I am not sure where you are, but if we are close enough, I would love to meet for lunch. Feel free to drop me a line at pusifoot at pacbell dot net.

Some place called Creative Auto Shop, or something like that, on Capp and 18th in the Mission. Recommended by the punk chick who towed the car. Either there are no reputable dealers left in SF, or she had poor judgement, cuz those guys were WAY sketchy. They were very surprised when he requested a copy of the estimate, and all the auto body shops I've ever gone to had the 3copy carbon paper so I'd get the middle copy after the estimate and the back copy when I paid.
The only repair place I've been to in SF that's still open is Japan Auto on Folsom @ 6th. The guy was pretty cool, but refuses to do refurbished parts.

Presumably the garage gave you an itemized invoice, and if anything looks high you can argue about it.
$392 strikes me as maybe high but probably okay once you add up diagnosis, labor, and parts. The parts, I think, were not much more than $100, if that (depends on the car, though, I could be way wrong).

Not that it isn't big enough to hurt, but skilled labor's expensive (and if you do skilled labor, you probably think it ought to be!).

It actually turned out to be $294, but the garage was still kinda sleazy in the 'tried and failed to take advantage of him' kinda way.
