Ack!

So the AAAS Annual Meeting is the same weekend as Pantheacon. In fact, I suspect it is every year.

This year, it is in Seattle, Feb 12-16 at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center and the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers and the Grand Hyatt Seattle in 'downtown Seattle.'

[Poll #175947]

Anyone have an idea of how much gas it costs to drive to Seattle, and what the range of plane ticket costs might be to get there?

It's about 860mi each way shortest route and about 12 hours elapsed if you keep a brisk pace and don't dawdle much at stops. Each way, of course. Gas prices drop compared to the bay area highs you're used to in other metropolitan areas, but there's a lot of out-in-the-sticks gas you'll be buying too, so base your estimates on the $2+/gal it's running out here these days.

I've found airfare in the $130 round trip range fairly frequently, and almost never below that. For my early august trip, on 2-weeks notice, I couldn't find a round trip ticket under $200 to save my life though. Folks that bought about 1-month in advance I think got $140ish tickets then.

And a non-logistical question: have you not done Pantheacon before?

Drive time

It is three hours between Portland and Seattle... add an hour to that if you hit either anywhere near rush hour.

I remember it being close to 12 hours between Portland and SF.. but I havn't made that trip in about 10 years so I could be way off base.

I think of it as about 10 hours reliably from various bayarea points of departure to portland. 9 if one both pushes and misses traffic, and 8.5 by Ducati. It took me 13 hours last month when I sat in friday afternoon traffic for 3 hours to cover the first 60 miles and then stopped every hour of driving to recaffeinate and drain my caffeinated bladder. If one doesn't actually stop in Portland I find that 3 hours to Seattle a lot closer to 2.5. But that may well also be a variation on the Ducati Time Traveler Problem[tm].

does money matter?

If you would rent a car in seattle, driving will probably be cheaper, unless you lose pay for the extra time it takes to drive. If you would get around on foot and public transit (or friends cars), flying will be cheaper.

I went Oakland to San Diego and back last weekend - the money spent on gas, inlcuding three days of driving as far as La Jolla and San Ysidro, would have bought one round-trip plane ticket.

Yeah, flights to Seattle are cheap, and quite fast -- you get there in less than two hours.

Flights have been going up a bit in price lately - I just got back from there, and my tix were a bit under 200. Driving is pretty cheap if your car gets decent mileage - about 860mi, and you can make it pretty quickly if you have no respect for speed limits. :) Plus, it's a pretty drive once you clear the central valley.

Driving to NYE wasn't quite as far as Seattle, I don't think (or vice versa). So, use that as an approximate.

IIRC...

I'm in Redmond if you want to crash at my place. Seattle proper is about 15 miles away.
