[Poll #169823]

City College

Anyone know how to go about switching sections? How likely is it for openings to occur in the first week or so of classes?

Costume making

So I'm making myself a RavenClaw cheerleader's uniform, or trying to. But most fabric stores close earlier than I can get to easily, and Discount Outlet was closed on Sunday. :(

I have three options: I can give up, I can do the fabric shopping on Saturday before the party and then have four days to make the entire costume, or I can try to make it to Bri-Tex before it closes on a weekday (since it is in SoMa, or so I here). I work at 3rd and Bryant and live at 7th and Folsom. Anyone have any brilliant suggestions?

In my experience, restaurants usually ask if you want all the standard defaults before they put them on, just in case, which is why I don't really mind if defaults are listed or not.

See, I consider listing condiments verbally (would you like foo with that) to be adequate. I'm talking about when the sign says "BLT-bacon lettuce and tomato on blah kind of bread" and I order it and then find that it has mayonnaise on it, in spite of the fact that no one ever told me it would.

Likewise, the inclusion of whipped cream on hot chocolate. I've been converted finally to reasonable quality whipped cream, but it is still annoying to have to remember these things; they should be obvious.

There is a Discount Fabric joint on 4th Street, right around the corner of 4th & Folsom, I believe.

I'm sorry I can't remember the exact intersection, but I always go there on foot from Powell BART, so I don't notice the cross streets. It's sorta halfway between Bryant and the Metreon, and has a huge painted sign you can see on 4th street (because the entrance to the store is in an alley, off 4th, not on 4th itself). They're open from ten 'til five - maybe you can dash over during a lunch break? Or slide off work early?

good luck!

many places assume condiments unless otherwise asked. If you hate condiments, you gotta learn to make sure they leave 'em off. Only thing that worked for me.

There's a kick-ass fabric warehouse that used to be right across the street from your work, but I think it's on 4th St. now. Right around 4th and Bryant. Cheaper than Britex. Go on a long lunch. They're not open late. When I worked at 3rd/Bryant I used to take long lunches there. Try them first, then Britex. Sorry I can't remember the address since it moved. There's that Mexican place on the corner of 4th and something? Past that place on 4th, towards CalTrain. There should be painted-on-wall signs for it.

Wow, it's actually down on Bryant? I thought it was a little closer to Market than that.

But yeah, [livejournal.com profile] questioner, what [livejournal.com profile] feyandstrange said. Avoid Britex if you can, as they'll bend you over, price-wise. Hell, I think it would be cheaper to hop the BART/bus and go to the closest JoAnn's in the east bay/peninsula than it would be to go to Britex...

Switching Sections:

Go to the section you are enrolled in, and the section that you want to change into. Try to get an add sticker for the section you want to get into, then (and only then) drop the section you want out of.

Openings in the first week...ha ha. (Hear Nelson from the Simpsons there... :-/) Today all of my classes with the exception of Vocal Music had about fifteen people waiting in the doorway trying to add, on top of the ten or so who managed to get seats. Bah, I say.

Depends on the class... the popular classes and the classes that are required to fulfill graduation/transfer requirements are more likely to be full than the somewhat "off the beaten path" classes - that might fulfill requirements, but are not essential (or have a more specific focus).

Example - you're more likely to be able to add something like "Visions of the Sacred" than something like "English 1A".

And day classes are less likely to be full than evening classes.

Britex pretty shiny. And tres expensive.
Hit up thrift stores. Use sheets, random fabric, oversized dresses, skirts, and whatever else will give you enough fabric to work with.

Condiments and college

1) My loathing for fast food pickles leads me to say "no pickles" automatically just to be sure. In a perfect world I wouldn't have to, but since fast food places in general have failed to recognize my import as the center of the universe, I have adapted around them. Regardless of how one would like it to be, condiments are often not listed and if one has preferences, one must state them clearly or be often aggravated.

2( I cannot speak for your school in particular, but this is my experience from both community college and university. Openings happen in most classes in the first or second week. Get with the GSI/ Instructor/whomever of the section you want and ask to be waitlisted. If you've got a different instructor right now, it might be a good idea to go to both just to cover your bases. Most GSIs are more willing to do this if you have a really good excuse beyond sinple preference or convenience. (I got stuck in a section that ran past the closing of university childcare. They accomodated me promptly. Having a copy of your schedule to prove that you have another class in that slot would also help.) Good luck.
