So [livejournal.com profile] unseelie needs new shoes as he starts retail tomorrow. Anyone have any recommendations on where we could go this afternoon to get him shoes?

Any brands you'd like to recommend?

---

In our 'late summer cleaning' rampage, I have in the last two days vacuumed the kitchen floor twice, mopped it once, and scrubbed it on hands and knees once. It is cleaner than it has ever been, and I think I need a new mop sponge.

I also finished the most recent Harry Potter, upset a friend, went to a party and met some new friends. Busy day I suppose...

On the list for today:
shoe shopping, maybe some other shopping, testing equipment for Wired, and maybe some more cleaning, interrupted midday with LWB.
On the kitchen cleaning list: wipe down counters and stove, put shelf in shelving unit, move microwave to kitchen cart, spray paint milk crates and duct tape them together to form a more efficient shelving unit

Oh, to the person who asked, Love Without Bounds is a poly social I host every week (or almost every week).

Nordstrom Rack in San Leandro -- good and cheap, but chaotic. Look for Rockport or Clarks, for sheer comfort. But they're on the higher end pricewise.

If you can afford full price, Nordstrom is generally a good source for *good* comfy shoes. Others are the Walk Shop or Walkabout, both in Berkeley.

Oddly enough, I was just discussing shoes with another LJer yesterday; both of us noticed that the other was wearing the same brand of shoe -- New Balance -- and he commented first, so I told him why I get them: they're reasonably affordable, good-quality (each of my pairs of NB sneakers has lasted me at least three years; and it's not like I don't put wear on them; they got danced in at Death Guild almost every week for more than a year, used for hiking around random parts of Australia, etc), and, as a bonus, unlike the leading brands, they're made in America using non-sweatshop labor.

Depending on how sensitive his feet are, he may want to replace the insoles, which are the only weak point of current NB sneakers; I got a pair of gel insoles that make long walks / short jogs rather more comfortable.

Although I guess working retail, you're not allowed to wear sneakers? (I never think about that sort of thing...)

For sneakers, NB is one of my favorite brands. Adidas is another. (I was assuming "nice-ish shoes" for retail.)

If he's a common size and looking for cheap, maybe Shoe Pavilion or Payless Shoe Stores would work. You can get adequate shoes there until some paychecks come in.

I've been very pleased with Rockport shoes for years, now. I find them to be very comfortable for long periods, as well as being one of the few makes that actually fits my foot with the right size (most shoes I have to go a size or more larger than my nominal size).

There are factory outlet stores in both Gilroy and Tracy that you can get Rockport's at for on the order of $50 a pair.

I swear by Merrells; they make both hiking boots and moccasins which are the perfect shoes for when you have to be on your feet a great deal. The only catch is that there aren't many stores that carry them; I tend to either get mine on the web or from a place in Boulder. But Nordstrom Rack sometimes has them at really good prices.

While I can't really reccomend any brands but Docs as that's all I wear, I would strongly suggest a nice pair of boots that can tuck under trousers. Docs, or similar, provide the air-cushioned soles and ankle support which is desperately needed when standing on your feet all day.

Depending on your budget, or if he has to go for something really dressy rather than a dressy boot, then I strongly suggest the Dr. Sholls inserts- the gel ones with the arch support. No matter what kind of shoe you're in, the inserts will make it feel like a million dollar shoe.

clark's is a very good brand, and you can occasionally score a pair fairly inexpensively at shoe pavilion south of market (on eighth or somewhere around there).

if you are looking for really good individual service and loads of info, go to on the run on 9th ave and judah (or irving, forget which). a bit pricey, but they really give a damn about your feet.

P.S.: We made the space in our schedule, and we'll be at HD for the
Hamster Party. But I hasten to point out that we're going for
[livejournal.com profile] australian_joe, not the anime...
