So WorldCon is in Toronto this year, the last weekend in August.

I'm tempted to go see if I can get affordable tickets to Toronto because I could do WorldCon AND visit my parents. But making it a long enough visit to fully enjoy both would be hard. (ok, so enjoy visiting my parents isn't necessarily a valid statement...)

Has anyone on here been to WorldCon? Is it worth the expensive con fee ($205 USD, $275 CAD for the whole weekend, although there are discounted rates for purchasing single days)? What kind of con is it? Is it mostly business-y, or a good party con, or both? If I just went for the duration of the Con, would there be plenty of times when I didn't want to be there that I could schedule time with my parents?

Oh, and dear Boston friends, WorldCon 2004 will be Labor Day weekend in Boston. Be sure that I will fight tooth and nail to be there and see all you fabulous folks while I'm at it (if I haven't convinced you to move here by then). ;p

Had a blast at last years WorldCon

Hmmm...well based on last years WorldCon it was definately worth the expense. I was glad I got the full blown all 4 day purchase though. In the long run it saved us money from buying the every day pass. Plus if you buy the "membership" you get to vote for the Hugo awards....(see below)

What kind of Con is it...well it is the World Science Fiction Convention. Hugo awards are given out (the Hugo is the award for best sci-fi novel, movie, etc) Definately a good "party con", the best of them are for the "who wants to hold WorldCon soon" parties. There were some great panels last year too.

Scheduling time with parents...there were a few times where I just hung out last year (when there were no panels I wanted to see)...but there was plenty to do though.

I had a blast (some really good memories). But now it makes me a bit sad (long personal story).

I've been to two WorldCons. If I could afford the flight and hotel and registration, I would so be at TorCon...

(Last year's was, of course, particularly nifty, because Strange Horizons was on the Hugo ballot, so I baked about 500 cookies, and went around giving people a cookie, and an SH flyer to go with their cookie. :-)
