Oh yeah, dvd trouble!

So I tried to hook my Laptop's dvd player to the tv via the vcr the other day and I just got audio, no video, in spite of much futzing around to try to get it work.

The problem could be with my laptop, with the connector, or somewhere in the vcr/tv setup. I HAVE successfully hooked it up directly to tvs with the right input thingies before.

Anyone ever run into this problem? My friend outcastspice is having the same problem with her recently purchased dvd player hooked up to an old tv via a vcr (like I'm trying to do).

I'm watching my new bubbly column thingie as it changes colours; I'm hoping that meditating over it will help inspire me in my work. Worst case, I'll trance out a little. I have a nifty raver toy! *bounce* And it was only $20!

Most DVD players won't play through a VCR. This is to help prevent copying the DVD to tape.

Two ways to get around it:
1) Don't go through the VCR, go directly to TV
2) Get an audio/video receiver and go through it.

Yup. Though my computer's DVD-video-out only won't work through the VCR if the VCR is turned on. It works just fine as long as the VCR is switched off. Which is nice, because I have the DVD video, and both my game systems, running through a switchbox, then that through the VCR, so in theory, I could tape cut-scenes out of games. Not that I ever have, but, you know, it's the principle of the thing. </geek> :-)

Which is why I'm going to be getting one of the Radeon video cards so I can watch TV on my computer. :)

I can do you one better even than that -- I'm about to acquire a 36" diagonal TV from my gf's parents, who are moving and don't want to ship it. I'm going to wire things up so I can play PC games on that sucker -- wireless keyboard and mouse, etc... 8-D
