Especially given recent events, the choice to apply to jobs in the US is becoming even more difficult. I'm already pretty picky about the jobs I bother applying to in the US; the most recent one was Science Writer for the American Institute of Physics, in College Park near DC.

The fact of the matter is that there are virtually no editorial science writing opportunities in Canada. I'll either have to go trade journal, become a Public Information Officer for a university, or go work for the government. Other options include doing normal journalism, trying to get in with one of the technology companies such as Digital Hub or Here's How or IT World Canada, or freelancing.

The US, however, presents the possibility of a wide variety of positions, with companies like Discover, Scientific American, Popular Science, Astronomy, and many more.

Holidays

I have a week off in the holiday season (Dec. 22-Jan 1). I'm contemplating getting my butt to Boston, Ottawa, or Montreal.
(1) Is anyone road tripping or thinking of doing a road trip to one or more of those destinations?
(2) Is anyone at any of those locations able or willing to offer crash space for some portion of a visit to me? To my fellow road trippers (within reason/depending on who they are)?
(3) Who will be able to spend time with me if I were to visit in that time period? I know the holiday seasons are crazy, so the question is highly relevant...

Arisia

The time has come for me to figure out what the hell I'm doing about Arisia. I would very much like to make it there.

(1) Anyone road tripping?
(2) Anyone want a sex-positive roommate?
(3) Anyone able to offer crash space Sunday and/or Monday night after the con? Thursday night before the con? The plane tickets are only $40 cheaper, so it's not enough to make me rent a hotel room for an additional night.
(4) For anyone from Toronto interested in going... flights through Buffalo are only $120-170 USD on Jet Blue depending on flight times and days. The con itself is only $35 USD if you register online before Dec. 31. That includes free food in the con suite. ;) The main hotel is $115/night, and they don't have prices yet for the overflow hotel.
(5) Would anyone be able to drive me to Buffalo airport either Thursday evening or Friday during the day? Or back from Buffalo airport Sunday evening or sometime Monday?

Also trying to make plans for visiting SF in February, so stay tuned for that...
