MAJOR UPDATE: Moving
Nov. 23rd, 2004 03:07 amAfter a lot of thought, I have decided that it is time for me to return to Canada. Strangely, I don't even want to look at Vancouver. I want to go to Toronto where I know that no matter what happens, my parents and brother will be there to support me. I need that sense of security, at the moment.
There are a number of factors motivating this move. My intention is to go to a graduate program in Journalism, and there is an excellent program at Ryerson in Toronto proper which is far cheaper than going to UCSC or UCB. In Canada I will have cheaper living expenses, free health care (after a 3 month wait period), and a country that is more politically in line with my own thoughts. If I succeed in my current goal of becoming a freelance writer, I will benefit greatly from living somewhere with low living expenses and universal healthcare, as I will continue to write for any market including high-paying US markets.
I'm currently figuring out how I'm going to handle the next few weeks before my trip to Toronto. A number of things are on my mind:
Replacement roommate, and purchase of furniture
That means that we will want someone to replace me here at the moonbase sometime between Dec. 15thish and Jan 1. Anyone looking?
I'll also have to sell some of my furniture and other goodies, so if anyone is interested in any particular furniture you've seen in my bedroom, please let me know.
Travel plans
I want to go to Arisia in Boston and the NASW and AAAS seminars in DC. I also have a *round-trip* ticket to Toronto which theoretically would fly back on Dec. 2. Now, what complicates this is my health coverage. When I establish residency, I must not leave the province for more than a month during the first three months of my residency, if I want to qualify for health care. Otherwise they might add extra wait periods or have me start the 3 month wait period all on my own. I'm not sure how they would know that I'd been gone too long, though...
Edit It's all very complicated and I found another option that works better than the rest, so I've deleted the rest of this part of the entry.
