Calorie Restriction
Aug. 11th, 2004 12:16 pmIn a friends group yesterday,
being_angyl pointed out that large amounts of research have indicated that being on a calorie restricted diet is linked to a variety of really huge health benefits.
Serendipitously, yesterday a brief article/press release showed up on Science Blog on this very topic.
Scientists Identify Compounds That Mimic Calorie Restriction
Investigators have identified compounds that mimic the effects of a low calorie diet but without a change in the amount of essential nutrients. The researchers believe it may be possible to design drugs that imitate many of the beneficial effects of calorie restriction resulting in the prevention of diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, which are more common in people who are overweight.
The article makes no comment nor statements about whether these compounds would also result in weight loss, but my assumption is that if that were the case, they would say so, because that would be such a big deal.
