data transfer - VHS to DVD

I'm wondering if anyone has the equipment to transfer VHS to DVD, or knows anyone who does. I have two tapes of my figure skating and having them in two different formats (and maybe mailing my parents backups in DVD format for extra paranoia) would be good, because its irreplaceable stuff.

I know that there are companies that do that sort of stuff, but if I can do this on the cheap, all the better.

Things that make me happy

-Things that cost me very little but help another out a lot
-Things where a friend can help me out of a tough spot by getting out of their own tough spot (ie. I can pay them to do something I really need done ASAP, when they really need money, etc.)
-Making a little girl feel like a princess (or a prince if she's more of a tomgirl)
-Finding a home or a use for something that had been lying around unused until now
-Seeing a student make serious progress in a class
-Hearing a student rhapsodize about how much she loves chemistry now and how much she used to hate it (she!)
-Watching a student's eyes light up when I list a bunch of possible extra credit projects... who knows which one got her excited, but does it matter?
-After how many upgrades, seeing some good, useful upgrades I've wanted for a while on iTunes

I could list the things that make me unhappy, but do you know what? That's not the point. :)
