So some water leaked all over my phone.

When I picked it up and figured this out, it seemed to be dripping some water out of the sync holes. I opened up the battery compartment and it was wet. I removed the battery, dried the compartment and battery, and pressed reset.

One time when I pressed reset it made high pitched noises. The other times, it flashes lights but nothing more.

Anyone have experience with water damaged palms or cellphones? Is my phone likely dead?

I may have to get a new cell phone anyway...

ugh. What horrible timing.

Well, assuming the phone IS fried...

I have two months before I get a discount towards a new phone (on April 5th)

No word on Verizon carrying the treo 600, only rumors.

Because of technical difficulties, verizon doesn't currently carry the kyocera 7135 although they plan to carry it again in the future; they don't know WHEN in the future, however.

Because they are not carried new by Verizon currently, prices for 7135s on ebay are really jacked up.

[livejournal.com profile] unseelie has a spare, basic verizon phone. But his palm phone is somewhat issueful and we were talking about needing to replace it anyway.

So the short and long of it is that we may both need to replace our cellphones at the same time. Ick.

At least we have the one functioning verizon phone. I'm thinking what I PROBABLY want to do is get a basic verizon phone for as cheap as possible and use that until either the kyocera 7135 is available cheap on eBay, or April 5th comes around and I can get a new treo 600 if those rumors are correct or a new kyocera 7135 if they are carrying it by then. It's only two months of crappy non-smartphone...

[livejournal.com profile] unseelie's cellphone isn't that bad according to him. Sometimes he has to shake it or the microphone fails to pick his voice up (maybe once every five calls), but other than that its fine. With a headset it might work perfectly.

So he's going to give me the LG phone and his old palm pilot so that I can not think about this/worry about it for a while until either a kyocera 7135 or 6035 fall into my lap for a really cheap price, or April 5th rolls around. Sounds good to me.

My cell should be up and working again sometime tomorrow. In the meantime, contact me via email.

From Gizmodo:

Kyocera smartphone battery recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of the battery in Kyocera's Palm-powered 7135 smartphone:

" On four occasions, the batteries in the Kyocera phones have short-circuited and heated up enough to trigger a built-in safety mechanism that vents superheated gases in order to avoid an explosion, according to the safety commission. On Dec. 6, a Philadelphia-area man suffered second-degree burns on his leg when the spare cell phone battery in his pocket vented, it said. In the three other instances, the batteries were connected to the Kyocera 7135, but the phones were not being held or close to a person when they vented, according to Kyocera."

Read more at CNET

The recall is only for phones sold between september and december bought either online or in stores belonging to Verizon Wireless, Alltel, or US Cellular.

Phones with batteries from a different supplier will be available "shortly."

What does this mean? It means that I won't be buying a used 7135, period. Because it isn't worth the risk to get a steam burn for a cheaper used phone.
