I'm a little worried. Over the past few days, I've been noticing some tightness in my achilles tendon area on my left foot. No big deal, I thought. A tight achilles tendon can usually be rectified by some gentle massaging and stretching.

Well, I just finished my stretches, and this is NOT just a tight achilles tendon. I have tendonitis-like tenderness (very extreme) along the left side of my left achilles tendon. It goes down and around the heel bone.

I've never had this before. In fact, I'm not sure what could have aggravated it. I haven't done anything interesting recently that I would even remotely expect to result in a new injury! But it is swollen down there (minorly) and extremely tender and hurts during certain kinds of movements. I will have to research that area of the body since I have no health insurance and try to self-treat.

Progress

I think my dieting efforts might be paying off; pants felt a little looser.

I also think that months of stretching have had a small payoff as well. I'm defintely more flexible than I was; today when I was stretching straddle splits, I could put my face to my knee when stretching to the side. That's not the only place I'm noticing a difference. Still, its about time.

Wired just called. I did NOT get the internship. They are really sorry for taking so long to get to me. It was a really strong pool of applicants, and it was REALLY close, and if I keep on racking up good experiences, they'd love for me to apply again in four months time. Oh, and they'd love it if I wanted to freelance for them, so the editor I interviewed with is sending me an email about that, and would be more than willing to give me some pointers on how to pitch things to them, etc.

Which makes me feel like... I don't know. I feel reasonably good about that. It sounds like I was *this* close to getting the internship. Which doesn't help me now. But if I do the PA Weekly internship, I could land a full time job elsewhere or alternatively, one of the Wired internships.

So... something.

I'm still a little worried about the PA Weekly internship... it could end up COSTING me money. I wish now I had applied for an internship at Mother Jones; it is in the city and has a much larger travel stipend which I wouldn't even need. Then again, it is full time and doesn't pay unless you get a fellowship, which you only get if you are extended to 8 months after the first four. And applications are due 2 months in advance of the start date. So I guess that's that.

I'll do something now. I'm just not sure what. Probably call up PA Weekly and say yes.

I stretched and massaged my ankle last night and it is still EXTREMELY tender to the touch. How did I do this? I don't remember doing ANYTHING to it. The pain goes along the achilles tendon on the left side and then loops between the ankle and heel bone to the left.

I'm thinking that if this persists I'm going to go into the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic. Because this can't be ok. It hurts too much to be "ok."

Oh, and I called up PA Weekly and accepted the job. So now I just need a part-time job or to get off my ass and do lots and lots of freelancing.
