I stretched and massaged my ankle last night and it is still EXTREMELY tender to the touch. How did I do this? I don't remember doing ANYTHING to it. The pain goes along the achilles tendon on the left side and then loops between the ankle and heel bone to the left.

I'm thinking that if this persists I'm going to go into the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic. Because this can't be ok. It hurts too much to be "ok."

Oh, and I called up PA Weekly and accepted the job. So now I just need a part-time job or to get off my ass and do lots and lots of freelancing.

Is it actively swollen? Do painkillers help at all? Does it hurt all the time, just when bending, or just when bearing weight?

(I know a little too much about ankle injuries...)

I haven't tried painkillers yet...

It hurts when I twist it a little... Like, sitting cross-legged or with just that leg in a bent-trying-to-be-parallel-to-the-floor position. Also sometimes when I'm turning.

Yesterday it hurt more in the morning, as though it were stiff.

I think it might be a little swollen... it feels more mush than my right ankle in the same place. But not obvious in a visual sense.

And right now I can feel that it is a little odd all the time, but it doesn't quite HURT.

Painkillers reduce swelling, which may be what it needs to heal. Take some. If that doesn't seem to help much or it's still just as bad after a couple rounds of aspirin wear off, then seek help. It's probably a minor injury that just needs to rest and heal, but if it keeps up the hurting even so, obviously, go see a doctor. Ease up on the stretching while it's inflamed and hurting, too.

so in case that's totally incoherent: take some painkillers, preferably the kind that say they'll reduce swelling, and leave it alone and let it rest for a day or so as best you can. If it ain't remarkably better after that, it may be time to see a doc. Stretching will make it worse, though, even if it feels tight.

Good luck, I hope the PA thing works out well, and gives you the experiance to get things where you will be both enjoying yourself/doing what you want and cash flow positive.

oh and I just caught up with your posts over the weekend... have a *hug*.

So, yeah, what A said. Take some ibuprofen. And much much water. And something with salt in it, so you'll actually be able to take advantage of the water.
Keep weight off of it, if possible, elevate it, and wrap it up with an ace bandage (if nothing else, to keep yourself _aware_ of it).
I get things vaguely like that, but it comes from my lower back, and nerve things. What kind of pain is it? Throbby, burning, just sensitive to the touch...?

Unfortunately, I CAN'T stay off of it today. I have two errands that need to get done so that I can pay rent next month and also have birth control patches for the next two months.

I took ibuprofen though and when I get home I'm going to elevate and ice it. We'll see what happens...

Also, when you get home, stretch your lower back and your hips.
If it persists, or whatever, remember to warm it up in the morning, so you don't do further damage to it, just out of sheer 'god damn it, get better now' kind of mentality.
I think you'll be fine. :)

i was gonna tell you to ice it, but i see that you know to do this. but the best treatment is RICE: rest, elevation, compression, ice. when you ice it, don't ice for more than ten minutes at a time, or you could get frostbite (no shit). and once the swelling (if any) goes down, you can alternate heat and ice in 5-minute increments for 20 minutes or so. this will cause vasodilation/vasocontraction, and will act to pump out any toxins from the area. ou can do this a couple times a day, but don't do it if you are either swollen or blue-bruised. if there's bruising, the heat/ice treatment is okay once the bruises turn yellow.

A not-too-hot (like, warm, not enough to make your skin red) soak/bath is good to relax the muscles, of course. I was told that ice is generally best used immediately after the injury, or use of the injured area (i.e. elevate and ice it when you get home and can get off the feet). Warm is generally okay any time, and may help with morning stiffness. When my ankle is bad in the AM, I'll soak in a warm-hot tub and gently stretch it there, rather than weight-bearing stretches out in the chilly air, at first, and that helps muchly.

Hey Q, I'm still a paramedic so I can look at your ankle but the free clinic is probably your best bet. Is there swelling or redness? Does it hurt worse when you massage it or stand on it? email me at richbrenner@hotmail.com if you want.
