So I went to the Oakside Cafe for breakfast/lunch, because they advertise free wireless. And indeed, there is a wireless network here. A strong one.

But my laptop won't access it, and I don't know why.

I set network and internet connect to airport, but it still didn't work. I'm going to try to reboot it now. I'm using the iMac they have in the lounge, but I can't send resumes from it because it doesn't have my resume on it. :(

There's a sheet that says
SSID: oakside
Mode: infrastructure
WEP: off

I know what the first and third are, but what is the second? Anyone have any idea how to get this to work?

It means it's an actual network, as opposed to a computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) network. Why it doesn't work depends on your laptop and config.

You may need your wep on and give a wep code, especially if it's a non-Apple WAP in the café.

infrastructure and WEP off are the defaults for Apple's Airport. SSID is the "network name". Airports try to use the empty name (called broadcast), but some networks require you to have an SSID set.

I'm pretty sure you can do that from the Network control panel.
