* For those of you experienced with hair dye, if a beginner like me wants to bleach her hair and dye it a really dark deep colour like blue or purple or red, do you think it's worth the expense of going to a salon?

* For those in London, Boston, or Toronto, please recommend the place you think would be best to get said dye job, or a funky hair cut, done. Remember I'm on a budget, and money is definitely an important object in this equation

I've /never/ gone to a salon, and I've never had troubles, and have been told by friends that my results are just as good (or in some cases better) than the folks they went to.

While someone that's done it a lot can get excellent results at home, it's really best to start with at least the observation of someone that's done a lot of hair work. Salons are a good way to get that without having the right friends handy. Just make sure you find one where the stylists have blue and pink hair themselves.

That depends... how long is your hair? And are you prepared to waste your time and money on your first attempt? ;)

Incidentally, my first attempt at bleaching/dying my hair was an utter failure. If your hair's dark, you need some pretty powerful bleach to lighten it enough.

If you can spare the cash and can't do with the hassle, a salon might be a better idea...

Having a friend help you bleach is a perfectly good plan. As for dyes, my favorite brand is Raw Colors, sold by Hot Topic. Second best is Special Effects. Avoid stuff sold by Sally Beauty Supply, and the brands Manic Panic and Color Fiend. They don't last.

B and I both have dark hair, so we got our hair bleached professionally (because we were only bleaching parts of our hair) and dyed the first time in the salon. But dying was easy, and we did it at home ourselves the subsequent times.
