Phone geekery?
Apr. 15th, 2008 01:27 pmOK, so the dude who is trying to unlock my phone says he can do it, but it wouldn't work on the UK networks.
I'm puzzled.
It's a quadband GSM phone; it operates on both GSM frequencies that the UK uses. It's Edge compatible, and only one of the local networks has gone completely over to 3G, so that isn't a problem.
Anyone have any idea if this could be true, or is this guy confused?
Oh, and yes, LJ is not blocked even though gmail is. Weird.

Date: 2008-04-15 02:05 pm (UTC)see if this link works for gmail: https://mail.google.com . it has the additional benefit of keeping you logged in over SSL, which prevents others from intercepting your gmail. you should always use that link when reading gmail over wifi.

Unlocking: Unlocking means clearing the phone's software setting so that the phone can be used on any network.
Debranding: This removes anoying logos ( think Vodafone ), predefined themes, images, sounds, locked WAP profiles and links. Debranding gives your phone a brand new look plus frees up its memory (if you care).
I'm running an unlocked, but not debranded Sony Ericsson w300i. It means I can't use mp3s as ring tones...among a few other annoyances, but I can use it on any GSM network.
