My Mac is in the shop indefinitely, so I may not have much access to internet over the next few days.

If you need to talk to me, you'll just have to be patient.

For those who offered help:
First, LOTS of thanks.

Second... I didn't have time to try the PRAM solution before I had to grab the only ride offer I had to the local service supplier. But based on what you have said, the non-service folks in the store have said, and what I've read, I'm pretty sure the hard drive is dead -- it was making really weird mechanical noises for a few hours before it went.

The good news is that I'm still in warranty so if it is the hard drive, the only thing I might have to pay for is the backup. If I can get the backup. If not, I'll be losing lots of files. :( I have a shiny new external hard drive, I just have been so busy with end of term and packing up the apartment to move and packing me up to travel that I didn't get around to doing the backup. Now I'm kicking myself.

ugh, i hope it's not a bad hdd.

that said, make sure you get it back - there's a good chance data can be recovered off it even if it's not bootable. the hdd could be bad in the part it's trying to boot off, but the rest of the data could be safe.

*nod* agreed.

Also, from now on -- backup when you pay rent. That trick works for me like you wouldn't believe. I don't forget to pay rent, and so I associate that with taking a backup. :)

That's a good idea. I don't backup to my external drive as much as I should - I'll try that.

Well, I mean, the ideal is that it turn out to be the hard drive but only the part that boots, and that they let me come in and do the backup myself. That way I wouldn't pay for anything and I'd still have the backup.

From a data point of view, for sure the hard drive being the issue is the worst outcome, but from a cash point of view, it is the only outcome that MIGHT end up not costing me about $140 (they charge £70/hour).

Good luck --- Blue had a very similar thing happen... Jbash and I tried to get data off the HDD, but it was a lost cause --- she had a back up, but it was 4-5 months out of date.

We've since set up automated backups over the network every day...
