Living in poverty
Dec. 8th, 2007 11:05 pmAccording to statscan, and then adjusted for inflation, the poverty line in Canada at present is:
21,510
As I would estimate my effective income as a student at 16,700 plus whatever I manage to make over the course of the summer, I do believe that I qualify as being below the poverty line. Go me.
Also, cooperatives. I hope you all understand that a non-profit cooperative is not subsidized (although it's original construction may have been government funded), and that part of why it is able to function for less than other buildings is that the members pitch in to get the work done. Thus, members must be screened. The system wouldn't work without member screening.

There are (in theory) assistance programs that target students and different ones to target low-income individuals. Both of which will make use of the poverty line number to determine applicability.
And, some situations trump others. For example, if you are a single parent who is also a student you would (probably) qualify for low-income status for many programs that would exclude students.
