Naming me

So I'm curious.

My first name, Danaeris, can be interested to be some combination of "mother of the gods" and "goddess of chaos and fortune." Many have said they think it's an unusual combination that is oddly appropriate for me.

But I still haven't chosen a last name that is right for me. What concepts should it embody? The writer, the scientists, the lover, the leader in me? Anything else? I'm being silly and asking your opinions. One of these days, I'll probably do a second naming ritual. Not anytime soon -- I'm not ready. But someday.

My first name means bitter, resentful. I would never think about changing it. I don't think names need to have any actual meaning to anyone but the name-haver, and that meaning can be self-defined. If I want to rename myself Berenice because that was Grandma's name and I loved Grandma, it doesn't matter what Berenice means. My mom named me after someone she loved a lot, it's a name that comes with love and community. I value it. It's also easy to spell and pronounce.

I think about changing my last name, but only because it's my ex-husband's name. If I change it, it will be to something that isn't too hard to spell or pronounce, and doesn't have baggage.

Well... while your given (or taken) name represents you, your surname generally represents a sort of background information about you. It is history, kinship, and other such things. I don't think it should have a literary meaning so much as be evocative. If you want to take a name like that for yourself, the sound of it should tell people where you come from and what surrounds you, not the spelling or historical associations or anything of the sort.

Perhaps you might mutter quietly until you find yourself saying something aloud that peaks your ears and smacks of your own history?
