So, many of you know how I feel about Curves, and the fact that their American owner donates large quantities of his money to anti-abortion organizations and abstinence programs -- money gained from the very women he is hurting.

Anyhow, a Curves manager just posted a job ad to the Toronto community. I immediately thought about putting in a snarky comment, but saw that there were already 6 comments, so I clicked to see them... and they were gone. The Curves Manager had deleted the comments and disabled them.

Since she put her email address on the ad, I proceeded to have the following conversation with her. God, I'm a bitch sometimes.

ME:
Regarding this post:
http://community.livejournal.com/toronto/4750818.html

As per the community rules, which you can find here:
http://community.livejournal.com/toronto/profile

9. Do not remove the comment feature from your post
10. Also please do not delete any comments in posts

So, um, what happened to those six comments you deleted... and why is
the comment feature gone?

HER:
I took the comments feature off (no deleting done) because there was posts
commenting my original post - comments which weren't appropriate.

Delete it if you feel the need to turn the comment feature back on -
I'm not posting it to get everyone's opinion on Curves.
But rather trying to open up a job position available in the downtown core.

ME:
There is no such thing as an inappropriate comment, in a livejournal
community. If you want to be free of comments and judgement of
corporate practices, then don't use that sort of venue for advertising
the position.

HER:
Just delete it, then.

Your attitude sucks, as does your 'community'.

ME:
I'm not a moderator, so I can't do that. But I'm sure they will
shortly, if you don't. You've violated the community rules, as clearly
stated on the user info page. I suggest you re-enable the comments and
apologize in an edit to the post, or delete it yourself -- you're only
making your organization look worse than it already does to the types
of people who tend to frequent communities like livejournal.

I'm also really impressed by the maturity of your use of words like
"sucks" and ad hominem attacks on our community, when you are posting
and communicating in a professional capacity. I'm glad that Curves has
you on their side.

With friends like her, who needs enemies?

Boy, that degenerated quickly.

Just to be clear - her responses did, not referring to yours "suck"?!

To be fair to her, I was deliberately provoking her. However, she isn't very bright. When she is functioning in a professional capacity, she can NOT afford to say things like that, or to behave in such a fashion. If I really wanted to, I could turn around and repost this conversation on the Toronto community -- and there's nothing she could do to prevent it.

But as you said - she's supposed to be able to handle that. And as provoking goes, I've seen far worse. How does she handle upset potential customers?

Oh.. I wish you would. Though I'd be careful, if she is an American she might try to sue you for slander. Did you know that though in Canadian law if what you say is true (like she is an evil corporate daemon from hell), then it is a defense against slander, but in the US its not. It's juat illegal to say bad thing (about powerful people). Gah!!

Er...where did you get that information? It doesn't match with my knowledge.

Hrmm.. dunno.. read it somewhere, but I can't remember where at the moment. I'm interested in what your counter-knowledge is; there is a good chance I might have got the details wrong.

Well, I can't remember ever hearing that libel or slander didn't have to be false, and a quick Google search seems to indicate that in this country, not only does it have to be false, but you have to prove there was malice involved. I'm not saying I take the word of the interweb as gospel, but in the absence of any evidence to the contrary....

sounds like SOP conservative practice.

Amusing. I especially liked your last paragraph. Sarcasm is so very *satisfying* sometimes, isn't it?

I am not aware of your attitudes towards Curves (nor do I know anything about the company), although it is apparent that you aren't a fan :-)

interesting! i was just this past weekend at a party where there was a conversation about Curves. do you know where (do you have a link, perhaps) one could find info about their anti-abortion etc nastiness?

To be fair, it's the founder and CEO who's anti-abortion. The company, so far as I know, has no corporate policy on the issue.

Which is exactly what I said in my original post, just to be entirely clear. The company owner, Heavin, donates lots of money. His fortune and influence -- and thus, his ability to benefit Pro-Life organizations which tell lies linking abortion to breast cancer -- is entirely a product of Curves' success, as is made clear by that Snopes article. And thus, I feel that there IS a cause and effect going on there (unlike the author of the Snopes article), and so, I refuse to support Curves.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that you'd said anything else, I was just trying to clarify for Spice.

I wouldn't support Curves either, both for their link through Heavin to Pro-Life causes, and for the idea that women can't handle working out in a regular gym, but need to be segregated.
