This morning I'm suffering from career angst. My peers are holding full time jobs in their fields, and I'm nowhere. And no sign of going anywhere. Blah.

Edit I should add that I've been putting the following things on hold until I know that I'm not getting this job:
-registering for the George Brown classes, which begin Sept. 5
-buying tickets to visit Boston in October (if I can still swing it vacation day etc. wise...)
-buying tickets to visit SF in February

I'd like to call them today but could manage to wait until, say, Friday if I had to. Obviously, this coming weekend I have to complete the registration for that class... and in the meantime, it could fill up.

[Poll #808578]

In other news, my apartment is shaping up very nicely and I have the bestest sweeties (and friends!) in the whole wide world. I had a really fun, productive weekend.

Not qualified to fill in survey due to having no job-hunting sense, but curious: French ($278, but COPA might pay for it, and twice as long a course, and probably more work) -- where would you be doing this at? How long is it?

I was going to use George Brown College, because in addition to being conveniently located for me, if I'm registered with them, I can use Ryerson's gym for only $85/semester.

If you want to sign up for Fall semester's french classes, you have to go to an assessment on August 30 or 31 between 5 and 7 p.m. at the Casa Loma campus (near Dupont station). Unless you're going for Beginner 1.

They have 8 different levels. The classes all take place simultaneously on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. at the Casa Loma campus.

Oohhh yeah. I would be a RANK beginner. Week-old-socks-on-a-camping-trip rank. But this sounds great, it is easily accessible for me from work, and I prefer one large chunky class. And I work near Ryerson, should I want that gym membership! Yay! I'll check it out.

I of course mean 28 days total! From the day you leave the interview and then add a week. If they say 2-3 I call at 4. One interviewer I had was iritated she said "I had some other items to take care of first" as if I could have known what she does in her job! She said 2-3 weeks as well.

Se felt I was keeping her on her toes and I had no right to do so. I was floored!! I blame bad manager types at the city.

This of course is rarely typical and most people in high-up positions know how to conduct themsleves professionally.

I'm sure giving people an exra week is plenty enough time.

The only time I have had to call a job back after they exceeded the time limit they said they would get back to me in they were really apologetic. They explained that the reason they hadn't gotten back to me was that the job I had interviewed for had been filled by an internal applicant due to some decree come down from on high and that they had spent the time trying to find another position to offer me because they really liked me. Turns out they hadn't managed to find one though so I ended up working elsewhere but it definitely made me feel not bad about calling them back.

As far as I can recall, all the other jobs I have interviewed for have gotten back to me in the time they said they would.

I just stumbled in here from a miscellaneous community and before I go about my own business again, I just wanted to leave my two cents here:
When I was young, the consensus was that as long as the prospective employer tells you that they are going to contact you, you don't call them back, unless you really get the impression that they are not going to call and you want to verify that.

This may of course have changed in the last few decades, but in my opinion, it still makes sense: If they are going to call you back, they will; you calling them will just annoy them because it seems that you are trying to rush them. If they are not going to call back, contacting them will not do much good beyond making you aware that you really need to keep looking - but that is pretty much a given unless you have a firm offer, anyway.

Good luck!
