This is a rule that applies certainly to me, and in my opinion, really, to everyone. It's a question of common courtesy.

If you're writing in to an advice "column" about something having to do with OTHER people, do not use identifiable handles unless you have their permission. This is, for me and in my opinion, a SERIOUS breach of protocol.

And yes, LJ handles are identifiable. Highly so.

As an addendum to this rule of etiquette, if you are interacting with someone who is a public figure -- therapist in the community, or event organizer, or somesuch -- you need to be very cautious about airing your problems with them publicly. They have a public image to maintain, and unfortunately, because of the way people are, any damage to that public image could affect their practice as a therapist or the events they organize. There's lots of grey area in this where you have to use your judgement. But it is important to be aware of this and factor it into your choices in this regard.

The more general form of this?
Your actions have consequences. Consider them before acting.

That is all. Now, please return to your regularly scheduled journaling, and have a Happy Halloween.
