I just received this on the Bi TO email list. Those of you anywhere near the St. Catherine's or Toronto area might want to take note and send a letter of protest.

Subject: ALERT: 97.7 "Gay Game"

This radio station is playing a new game where contestants phone in to determine whether something (like a movie for example) is "gay" or "not gay" - as in "lame or stupid". For example - the DJ says the name of a movie and the contestant responds, "Oh, that's gay". Once the DJ responded, "no, you're wrong. That movie is totally cool". Get it?

We, as a community need to respond to this. I have already presented myself at the radio station but the manager was unavailable. I left a note explaining my upset and that this "game" needs to stop immediately.

I would love it if we all did the same. The station phone # is 905-688-0977 and the FAX is 905-684-4800.

I am off to the cottage as I type (I heard this on the radio on the way out of town and turned around!). Let's please let this station know that we are not going to put up with this offensive, ignorant and homophobic commentary in the public domain. I hope this station manager doesn't know what hit her.

Please forward this message on to anyone who can help.

thankyou
martha

I just got this back, fifteen minutes after sending my email:

"Thanks for taking the time to send your email. If more people took the
time to let me know when something upset them, we would be a lot better
off.

I understand why you would be upset by what was aired this morning.
Please know that the contest "Gay Or Not Gay" will undergo a serious name
change before it is aired again.

Again, thanks for your concern and thanks for listening to 97.7 HTZ-FM."

Well, a little complaint goes a long way. :)

So I have a question. Yes, I it is serous. Do you think that "lame or not lame?" would be similarly offensive? Because I call things "lame" all the time without even thinking about it but then a friend with an injured limb started mocking me for it in a way that lead me to believe that he was somewhat bothered by it. I don't even think of "lame" as having anything to do with injured limbs because I think of that as falling under the term "handicapped".
