sometime in the next 1.5 months I need to make or buy horns and wings.

Does anyone have advice on where to buy either of the above on the internet or in SFBay area? Alternatively, has anyone on here made wings before and can give advice on the process---either making cheap boring ones or fancy pretty ones? Also advice on making horns, although I haven't the foggiest idea how to do that, whereas I've already found one page with wing making instructions.

So, bat wings or feathered?

None of the above?
I'm fey. I want fey wings that feel right to me. I don't know exactly what they'll be, but I think diaphanous is approx. right. There is a type that is usually made out of semi-opaque materials, or mixtures of such. That's sort of what I'm thinking of, but beyond that, I'm not sure, except that they are BIG. No wimpy wings for me.

Well, that makes sense. Are the horns for you as well?

I'm imagining dragonfly-styled ones now.

Chyks with wings. *dreamysigh*

Yes, the horns are for me. I'm not thinking dragonfly wings, alas... they are not shaped right... and there are colours and stuff. yeah.

What kind of horns? Big ol' ram horns, or smaller "succubus/MWE/whatever" ones?

'Cause I know someone who makes 'em. :)

definitely on the smaller side. More detail I'm not sure of yet. I need to think and meditate and stuff. I'd definitely be interested in getting hooked up with your friend for this purpose if the price were right/they could be done and shipped here on time.

wings...

I've made a few pairs of wings, for imperium events. probably not the same that you're looking for (I'm talking... 12+ foot wingspan, the wing material made out of vinyl), but I can still offer design tips from my experience.

how much damage will they have to hold up to? if you're not running around and getting the crap beaten out of you, it'll probably be a LOT simpler for you than it is for me...

just ask away, what exactly do you want to know about the process?

Well, I do want them to be big. Twelve foot is definitely TOO big, though, given that's more than twice my height. :)

I'm guesstimating that I'll want about a 4 foot height and maybe a 2 -3 foot width (of each wing, not total wingspan if they were spread out flat). That's very approximate. Shape is very much up in the air. Colour or colours or patterns etc. are still very much up in the air.

They will be worn at a small private party/ritual, and subsequently may be used for other parties and/or larps. But I doubt that they will be used for violent boffer larps.

I found this:
http://www.monitor.net/~mamazon/wings.html
which has directions for making wings. I look at them and think, "Those are way simpler than what I have in mind." I'm pretty sure that given time and patience and materials I could adjust those directions to make something with multiple fabrics/colours (instead of using old nylons) and using multiple wire frames for different wing 'petals.'

I guess I'm just not sure if it will (1) be much cheaper than ordering online (which will cost me $50-100), and (2) be too much trouble. Then again, I might have better luck getting 'exactly what I want' if I make them myself.

Thoughts? Advice

Not sure about the wings.. but for horns I recomend http://www.panshouseofhorns.com/ I got mine from the, and they do custome work, they are based in the city and are very nice (you can see mine if you want) I would hurry and order now though, they get backloged at haloween every year.

[livejournal.com profile] pisel and [livejournal.com profile] asamusume made some fairy wings for her. you can see them in one of her LJ pics. I think they used a similar technique to the picture you showed except with cloth instead of pantyhose, stiched around the wire (you can make them a lot bigger that way) and with the wire only going up the spines, not around the outside.

I've only made batwings (and am about to make my second set!) so I don't personally know much about fairy wings.

Ooh! I can make decent cheap wings from nylon stockings and coathangers; they come out looking pretty damn good. (They're "numerous little wings" style, as opposed to "two big wings" style, though.) I've seen horns done with clay on a headband-ish elastic thing; I could do those, too, with a little experimentation.

big wings!

Let me know if you figure out how to build big
wings. I've seen a lot of the 2-3 ft. stretched hose
variety, but those probably can't be made much bigger.

I eventually want to do 10-ft high wings, when I have some
copious free time. I was thinking of doing some sort of welded
aluminum frame thingy, but that might be overkill. And I would
have to figure out how to weld.

Wings n' horns in da house

I've made wings (bat-like). I've got tons of wire.

I've got horns. I bought them at Costumes on Haight, which is about three blocks from where you'll be living. I know the techniques for making horns, too, but I couldn't bother when I needed them to go and get the materials, do the sculpting, etc.

Talk to me next time you're over. I'll show you the wings I made, the wire I've got, the horns I bought at Costumes on Haight, etc.

The materials for horns are probably $10-12 at Mendel's Art Supply, two blocks up Haight, and you'd have stuff for tons of them. Pre-made ones are about twice as much, but it's instant gratification and less trouble. (:

Hmm, looking at www.panshouseofhorns.com I see that they supply Costumes on Haight, so they probably made the pair I've got.
