fur, felt, and working with leather
Oct. 24th, 2004 02:43 amI finally got the collar I've been drooling over for more than a year.
I'd like to line it with some kind of fur, leather, or felt using glue to protect my skin both from the tough leather and the metal rivets used to create it.
Anyone know what kind of glue can be used on belt leather?
Anyone know where a person can get ahold of relatively small fur skins, or soft leather or suede or somesuch?
Any suggestions for what to line it with? (I'd have to meet the fur swatch in person first to determine if I'm allergic)
I'm appalled, absolutely appalled, at the amount of academic dishonesty and cheating I have so far observed this year in my 9th and 10th grade classes.
The scary thing is that they're really obvious about it. Like, making the same mistakes on problems, using the same awkward phrasing, etc. when copying off each other. When plagiarizing, they'll often have an opening and closing paragraph which they wrote (which they did not spell check and has awkward grammar, sentence construction, and lots of mis-spelled words), and the rest will be directly copied from a website (often one of the first few links that shows up if you search google for the topic they are talking about).
They don't use quotation marks.
Gah. I think I'm too tired to rant properly. Just let it be said that I'm disappointed and frustrated.
Looking back, I know in college I started to occasionally copy people's problems when I ran out of time before the problem set was due. Most of the time, I'd try to take the time to understand the solution, and then go re-solve it myself using that method the friend showed me. That I never felt guilty about, in classes in which we were encouraged to collaborate. It's those few times when I gave into the stress and pressure, and, five minutes before the pset was due, copied that one last problem I couldn't figure out directly off a friend.
That was wrong. At the time, though, I didn't care, and the other students didn't seem to either.
So I suppose I should be more understanding of these students, except for the fact that I'm pretty sure that they aren't even trying to solve them, whereas I normally had given it my best shot.
anyway, it is clearly bed time for me. night night.

Date: 2004-10-24 08:48 am (UTC)When I was in high school I copied homework all the time. Now I know it was wrong. At the time I thought it was just survival. I had more hours of homework every night then I could do. Copying seemed to be the best way to get by. It was also hard to see the value of doing homework.
I am not saying what they are doing is right, but it is not happening in a vacuum.

Date: 2004-10-25 10:57 am (UTC)As for leather supply, I've been told that theres a great leather supply place in the Oakland area that has most everything one could ever want that SCA armor folks have recommended to me, though I couldn't immediately find it in yahoo. Theres also a smaller place on 10th St (I think its between Folsom and Howard) that has some supplies, and while not all that cheap might be good enough for your needs (and you can walk to it).
